Mr Beattie said retired judge Tony Fitzgerald's findings that alcohol consumption was five times the national average in the region needed quick action. He said all levels of government must put party political considerations aside and work together because 10,000 lives were immediately at risk. "At the end of the day this is not just a civil libertarian issue," he told ABC radio in Brisbane. "This is about human decency, about human rights and children reaching their full potential." In his report into the social problems besetting Cape York Peninsula, Mr Fitzgerald called for an overhaul of how the region's alcohol problem was tackled. He said if changes were not made to alcohol consumption a complete ban in three years should be implemented.
