'Terrorism will be defeated if the international community summons the will to unite in a broad coalition, or it will not be defeated at all,' he told the UN General Assembly at the start of a debate that is expected to last all week. The debate was the first held by the 56th annual Assembly, which officially convened on Sept 11, the day kamikaze terrorists, using hijacked passenger airliners as flying bombs, destroyed New York's World Trade Center. Some 5,700 people are missing or confirmed dead since the attack, which US President George W. Bush has blamed on Osama bin Laden, a Saudi-born extremist believed to be hiding in Afghanistan. 'We are in a moral struggle to fight an evil that is anathema to all faiths,' Mr Annan said. 'Every state and every people has a part to play. This was an attack on humanity, and humanity must respond as one.' -- AFP Advertisement Related stories Current: Taleban's days numbered, admits Musharraf Time running out for aid to Afghanistan: UN Afghan ex-king may join forces with opposition Turkey quizzes Osama's brother about attacks Jakarta promises to protect Americans Britain freezes US$88m terror funds The Circle Alliance Rein in militants KL tracking student militants Anti-war protests erupt in US Hot Picks Leicester sacks manager Taylor Afghan ex-king may join forces with opposition Only 1 in 10 jobs filled by those laid off from work Man U still the world's richest soccer club More students have post-secondary education Click to close window
