Officials 'brainstorm' Afghan aid

From AFP
16nov01

THE United States and Japan will co-host a high-level meeting next week on financial aid for the reconstruction of war-torn Afghanistan, the US State Department has announced.

Top officials from countries and international institutions "likely to play a vital role in the long-term process of Afghanistan's reconstruction" will meet at the State Department on Tuesday, said spokesman Philip Reeker.

He said the meeting would be a "first step" in a process that would be later widened to include the entire international community.

Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the European Union, the United Nations, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank and members of a UN support group for Afghanistan have been invited.

Mr Reeker said it was not a "donors' conference" aimed at securing specific financial pledges, but rather a brainstorming session to "assess what the needs are and what the next steps will be".

The US-Japanese initiative comes as the United Nations tries to organise a conference bringing together the various Afghan factions in a bid to build a broad-based government for the country in the wake of the Taliban's collapse.

The international community is also trying to put together a multi-national security force to stabilise the country and allow for the installation of a new administration.
