Couple dead for five weeks

From AAP
18dec01

A Mt ISA couple had been dead five weeks before anyone suspected something must be wrong, prompting police to urge people to check on friends and relatives this Christmas.

John Carlton Du Bas, 68, and his wife Denise Emma Du Bas, 64, were named today as the couple found dead in the bedroom of their house in the north-west Queensland city earlier this month.

Police said today there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances in relation to the deaths although no note was found.

Detective Senior Constable Nik Newman said the case should prompt people to check on friends and relatives during the Christmas break.

It was believed the Du Bas's had been dead for up to five weeks before a concerned neighbour reported he had not seen them for more than a month.

Const Newman said a post mortem examination had been unable to determine the cause of death because the bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition.

Police were waiting on the results of toxicology tests.

Const Newman said Christmas was a time that many people felt isolated, especially the elderly.

"People should try to check on friends, family and relatives and if they miss a regular contact or notice something is amiss, they should report it to police," he told AAP.

The couple's next of kin, who live in the United States, have been notified of their deaths.
