[ back to Breaking News index ] TOP STORIES Pakistani kills family members ISLAMABAD|Published: Saturday September 21, 8:05 PM An enraged Pakistani systematically murdered seven members of his family with a shotgun because of what he called their loose morals, a senior police officer said. Mohammad Nawaz shot dead his two sons, two daughters, one son-in-law, one daughter-in-law and his wife before dawn, Assistant Superintendent of Islamabad Police, Javed Akbar, told AFP. Nawaz, who surrendered to police, said he had given his victims tranquillisers before killing them one by one. "He fired 20 cartridges with his double-barrelled shotgun," Akbar said. The killer told police that he was fed up with his family because of their "loose character". He said his daughter eloped with a Christian boy and obtained a civil marriage about six months ago while his son had married a girl whom he had abducted a few months previously. "I had been waiting for an opportunity for their joint gathering because they had ruined my reputation," police quoted Nawaz, who recently retired as an interior ministry driver, as saying. Akbar said neighbours of the killer, who live in government employees' housing in the busy Sitara Market area, heard the gunshots but did not call police. "This shows the indifference in our society," he said. ©2002 [I suppose it is moral to kill immoral people] [ back to Breaking News index ] --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright © 2002 John Fairfax Holdings Ltd.
