I don't care: Hanson

25oct01

PAULINE Hanson said she could not care less about One Nation candidates' links with racist or anti-Jewish groups.

Ms Hanson angrily dismissed a Jewish organisation's list of federal election candidates it said had racist and anti-Semitic records as an attempt to stifle freedom of speech.

The B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation Commission yesterday named 10 candidates, including four from One Nation, with links to organised racist groups.

Mr Hanson, who was campaigning in Hobart, told AAP that B'nai B'rith's action was absolutely pathetic.

"I'm absolutely furious about this," she said.

"It's an absolute disgrace. You can't say what you think in this country any more."

Ms Hanson said the thought police were stifling freedom of speech.

"There shouldn't be any Jewish organisations," she said.

"There shouldn't be any Chinese organisations, or any other organisations. We are all Australians. "I don't say ignore your cultural background or who you are, but we are Australians and that means freedom of speech."

Among those named by B'nai B'right was Denis Collins, a former Northern Territory MP who is running in the marginal Tasmanian seat of Bass for One Nation.

He was linked to the Citizens Electoral Council, the militia group AUSI Freedom Scouts and the racist Victorian newspaper The Strategy.

Mr Collins yesterday did not deny the links and used biblical texts to justify his view that Jews controlled the world economy.

At one point, while talking to AAP, he referred to the "synagogue of satan".

Asked if she knew about his and the other One Nation candidates' alleged links, Ms Hanson said: "I couldn't care less. I'm not interested."
