Shaul Mofaz yesterday ratified the reprimands issued to a number of officers involved in the planting of a bomb that exploded and killed five Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip last month. In accepting the findings of the inquiry into the November 22 incident, Mofaz concluded that there had been an "operational mishap whose result was serious and saddening." Five Palestinian children, members of one clan, were killed when they apparently played with a bomb one of them had found. The IDF initially denied any involvement, but later admitted its special forces had planted a device near Khan Yunis which they had hoped to detonate against Palestinian gunmen. The IDF conducted an inquiry on operational and professional levels that concluded that the tragic outcome was due to a combination of professional mistakes, bad decisions, and lack of attention, an IDF statement said. The investigation was headed by OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Doron Almog. The IDF said that Mofaz himself would personally reprimand a number of officers involved, but no further legal action was expected. A number of corrective directives and guidelines were ordered for immediate implementation.
