Sunday September 16 7:16 AM ET 'Heartbroken' Pope Urges U.S Calm After Attack By Jane Barrett FROSINONE, Italy (Reuters) - Pope John Paul (news - web sites) said on Sunday he was ``heartbroken'' by the terror attacks in the United States but urged the American people to shun the temptation to respond with hatred and more violence. The Pope made his appeal, the latest in a series since the devastating attacks last Tuesday, after a mass in the city of Frosinone, south of Rome. Although the Pope has expressed condemnation and condolences since the attack, it was the first time he personally spoke of the concern about a possible U.S. military response. ``May (the Madonna) give comfort and hope to those who are suffering as a result of the tragic terrorist attack which has deeply wounded our beloved American people in these last few days,'' he said, speaking in a clear but sad voice. ``I direct my heartbroken thoughts to all the children of that great nation. May Mary welcome the dead, console the survivors and sustain the families that have been particularly hit,'' he told some 40,000 people. ``I pray that the Virgin Mary might help them not to fall into the temptation of hatred and violence but rather to commit themselves to justice and peace,'' he said. President Bush (news - web sites) has said the attack, which killed up to 5,000 at the World Trade Center in New York, and the Pentagon (news - web sites) in Washington, had put the United States in a state of war. Bush has vowed to ``smoke out'' the enemy and win the battle against terrorism. The U.S. government says Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) is the prime suspect behind the attacks. The day after the attacks, a visibly shaken Pope, who has visited the United States seven times and met Bush less than two months ago, called it ``a dark day in history.'' The Pope, visiting Frosinone to celebrate the building of a new church, wove his homily around the theme of forgiveness. ``(God) feeds the human heart with the hope of forgiveness and the joy of reconciliation,'' he said. Security was high in this central Italian town, with some 4,000 police in place to protect the Pope and those gathered in the square, including Italy's Deputy Premier Gianfranco Fini. There have been reports in the Italian media that the Vatican (news - web sites), St. Peter's Basilica or the Pope himself could be a target of Islamic guerrillas. Deputy Vatican spokesman, Father Ciro Benedettini, asked to comment on the reports, said: ``We are not aware of any elements of alarm that justify these reports.'' Trying to get a better view, hundreds of people crowded onto roof-top terraces and balconies bedecked in yellow and white balloons -- the colors of the Vatican flag -- and banners honoring those who died in the U.S. attacks. Children closed the mass ceremony waving flags from around the world and a rainbow banner emblazoned with the word ''Peace.'' The Vatican has said a papal trip to Kazakhstan and Armenia will go ahead next week despite security concerns following the U.S. attacks.
