There are many misunderstandings about wicca so I thought I would help out a little.
What Wicca is NOT
- Wicca is not a satanist religion. Witches do not even believe in Satan. Satan is a Christian creation. How can we worship something we don't even beleive in?
- Wicca is not a sacrificatory religion. There is no killing animals or babies or even drawing blood.
- Wicca does not cause harm to anyone. The three-fold law states that anything you send out will come back to you three-fold - three times good or three times any bad.
- Wiccans are not out to convert the masses. We realize that no one religion can be right for everyone.
What Wicca IS
- Wicca is a neo-pagan religion. "Neo" means new, but wicca takes its inspiration from ancient religions in Europe. The origins of wicca are pre-Christian but most of the religion was lost when the Christians took over, so the general idea of wicca is generally new and awakening.
- Wicca is a nature based religion. This does not mean we worship trees. We center our way of life in respect to Mother Earth. Many wiccans are vegetarians and others believe that the earth is meant to be enjoyed. (but NOT exploited!)
Wicca is a religion that believes in two supreme beings - the God and the Goddess. If the creators modelled us after themselves, is it hard to believe that there are male AND female aspects of the divine?
- Wiccans believe that is there is no difference between Creation and Creator. Deity exists within everything.
- Wiccans believe that each and every wiccan is priest/ess. No one has solitary access to the God/dess.
- Wiccans make use of the natural magick within everything. They learn to use and direct it.
- Wiccans believe that our bodies are sacred, and some rituals are done skyclad, or naked, but that is left to personal choice.
- Wicca is a highly prejudised-against religion. People still see witches as things with green skin and warts who stir up evil-smelling brews and potions. Wicca is a recognized religion in the United States, but it doesn't seem to matter.
- Last but definately not least: Wicca is more than a religion. It is a way of life. We are constantly learning and growing. Wicca is a lifelong journey and you will never know everything, but keep pursueing this path if you are drawn to it. Blessed Be!
