Women's Wheelchair Basketball

Women joined the men in the sport of wheelchair basketball in 1974 when the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) permitted women to play on its formerly all male teams.  Since then the Women's Division was created and 13 women's teams play on a yearly game schedule.  The Lady Sun Wheelers is one of the newest additions to this national league.  Formerly the Richmond Rolling Thunder, this team of women cagers plays up to 24 games a year and provides an avenue of athletic expression for women throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.  Practices are held in Richmond every Monday night from 5:45 - 7:45 at Providence Middle School Sports Complex and on Thursday nights from 7:30 - 9:30 at Humphrey Caulder Gym. The Lady Sun Wheelers begin practicing each season just after Labor Day and continue until the beginning of June.  Tournament and game play begins in October and finishes at the National Tournament in Mid-March.  This year the women finished Nationally in 9th place.
