Chen Hanwei - An Actor belonging to the "Natural Stream"

Source:Pin Fern Ren Shen (1991)

There is a boy who blames himself for being too tall. That is Chen Hanwei. He feels that he is tall and skinny like a bamboo, giving the impression that he also has no substance. That is why most of the time he got to play non-meaty  roles such as good guys and rich lads. He said that if he knew, he would not have pleaded with  his father to put up a basketball net at his house. It  tempted him to jump too often and grow too tall.

Luckily for him he goes up his acting career step by step. Otherwise a sudden climb can result in a big fall. That will be more unbearable. Hanwei is from Johor Bahru, Malaysia. After he graduated from pre-university in 1987, a friend got an application form for "Star Search" from SBC. They went together for the audition and contest and only Hanwei made it. So he joined SBC when he was 18 years old.

Although he had experience  in cross-talk and stage acting in his secondary school days he played mostly cameo roles when he first entered SBC. Only in "Village Hero" he played the lead role as a simpleton. In these 3 years he acted in 5 shows. Among them, his favorite role is Yu Zheng Fei in "Behind Bars" because he captured the personality of this character and was at ease in portraying it.

Though  he gives an  image of a "clean kid" from SBC, he would rather act as a rebellious guy. He felt that he is a rather stubborn and rebellious person himself and would enjoy playing such a character. But in his new show  "Quick Turn" he is going to play a "good kid" again.

When you meet Hanwei you can naturally sense his "naturalness". Acting or  handling matters with exaggeration and fakeness will give him goose pimples. So those Taiwanese shows that torment the senses give him the creeps. There is hope in a natural actor like him who constantly correct and improve himself to gain in-depth acting skills.

Hanwei has a modern and even trendy look . He trimed  his hair to a very short and wierd hair-style. It seems that it is the "criminal hairdo" of prisoners. And to suit his 70's role in "Quick Turn", he is going to cut it even shorter. But no matter how he changes his outward appearance, his clear eyes and well-defined lips gives him an air of righteousness. This is perhaps why SBC let him play good guy roles most of the time.

On the day of photography his dressing is really carefree and trendy. His long loose shirt hangs out of a very short jacket. His mismatched  dressing contrast with his serious walking poses. He dislikes tucking his shirt into his trousers and tightening it with a belt. This is but a small manifestation of his naturalness.

He values first impression when making friends. If  he feels comfortable and acceptable , he will continue the relationship. Of course this is not always the case for example his relation with Zoe Tay.  They started off disliking each other. He finds her cold and detached and she thinks he is a "small kid". It was after a period together that  they become familiar with each other. Now they have become mutual good friends. Such friends include Wang Yu Qing, , Chen Hui Hui etc. Hanwei's friends can be so close to the extent of living  in each others' house.
