Objective

Diploma Project in New Media for duration of 4-6 months

Executive Summary

My training at Srijan Technologies Pvt. Ltd., helped me understand the use of a business solution such as a corporate website or a software application in context of the business concerns objectives of the company/organization.

This has given me an insight into approaching a business solution keeping in mind not only the experience of an end-user (which I primarily learnt during my education) but also understand and address the business requirement. This required an understanding of technology tools available and their constraints.

The principles of Information Architecture and Cognitive Psychology came into practical use to ensure better user experience and its integration with design. The hands on experience that I have gained has made me aware and equipped to deal with practical problems faced in day-to-day work environment.

With this experience and the other work that I have done, I am better equipped to take up a Diploma project.

Projects Completed

Srijan Website: Srijan is into building bespoke software applications, website design and development, and E-Business solutions for customers in India and abroad. The website they earlier had was poor on design as well as the information structuring and presentation. Srijan was aware of that, but did not know a better way around.

The variety of applications that they had done was quite large. The challenge therefore, was to work with the customer in identifying the key focus areas of the company, restricting the number of highlighted projects by classifying the domain areas, and structuring information to address their need of catering to both offshore and domestic customers.

I closely worked with the Graphic Designer, and the Managing Director of the company in creating a highly effective navigation structure, while meeting their design and business requirements respectively.

CISCE portal: Council for the School Certificate Examinations, one of the two National Examination Boards in India.

At the time the website was designed, it was not clear how it would evolve. The content on the website, during the past 2 years of maintenance grew immensely. The articles published, in most sections, were difficult to find and reach. The portal was designed without anticipating the content that would be required to manage in future. The design and structure was not able to accommodate the growing number of articles and sections. Also the design did not highlight new articles that were being posted. It also lacked consistency and visual interest.
My challenge was to redesign the portal and achieve the dual objectives of scalability and visual appeal.

The New portal that was launched in May 2003 has been made keeping in mind all the above addresses the drawbacks in the previous website.problems. The design is visually appealing and has plenty of room for introduction of new sections and articles. The portal is now more organised and structured and with an intuitive easy to navigatatione. Srijan, and personally I, have got immense appreciation from the customer. Srijan also has appreciated my work, skill and dedication immensely.

Ongoing Projects

Project Management Application: The idea was to design an a Project Management/Time Sheet Management application for small and medium sized organizations businesses, which incorporates a Time Sheet, Task Manager, Project Planner, Proposal Costing and Organization Resource Manager.

Through this application the Project Manager can easily assign tasks to his/her team and monitor the team’s efficiency. The challenge was to design an application which would be user-friendly, so as to address the concern of Srijan - that "people should not spend a large proportion of time filling in their Time Sheet".

I designed the screens of the application, which allowed quicker trapping of time spent on each task. A critical aspect during this design was to understand technological possibilities and limitations. A team member is also relieved of filling in unnecessary fields and keeping track of time. The time taken for a person to complete a task is automatically trapped by the appliaction. The application is being developed in Java. The screen design has helped the development team understand and size the application better.
