Columbia Encyclopedia: Offering free access to "nearly 51,000 entries" and "more than 80,000 hypertext cross-references", the sixth edition of the Columbia Encyclopedia is a first-rate tool for fast online reference.
It's simple to use -- just type in a keyword in the search box (full text or entry word) and hit 'Go' -- and the information that comes up is often as complete as it can be in this kind of format.
You can look for just about everything on any subject under the sun, and chances are, you'll never be unsatisfied with the illumination provided.
There's a 'Guide' to help you use the encyclopedia, and such things as 'Pronunciation Key', 'Preface' and 'Abbreviations' cover all the standard features of reference books.
There's also an alphabetic index of entries and an index to biographical entries to make your searches more subject-specific.
Since most of the pages are text-based, loading is pretty swift here.
Jacobyte Books: Yet another e-book store, but the great thing about this is, it offers some free reads. And in these days of "dotcomdoom", it's a sin to pass up on anything good that's available for free on the Internet.
The books featured here are mainly independently published works that you're not likely to find in your regular bricks-and-mortar book store.
There's both fiction and non-fiction, and the latest publications are highlighted with short synopses on the main page.
To get a taste of the contents, just click on 'View an excerpt' and you get a whole section of text, usually the entire first chapter.
Of course, if what you've read has intrigued you, you might actually consider ordering up the book online. But be mindful that despite seeming reasonably priced, shipping costs for the books can run pretty high.
Anyway, the fact that there's always a lot of free stuff to read here should keep you coming back for more. You might also want to trying your hand at being a lit-crit by submitting a review of a Jacobyte book you've read.
Muhammad Ali: Definition Of Champ: An excellent online biographical exhibit spotlighting one of boxing's true greats.
A 15-part biography, covering career highs like 'Ali-Frazier I', 'The Thrilla In Manila' and 'The Rumble In The Jungle', tersely and sweetly sums up his life and achievements.
And 'Photos' features fine action shots from some of his biggest and most memorable matches.
The 'Fights' section dishes out all the detail that matters -- a treat for stats-obsessed boxing buffs -- and plenty of punches are thrown and hardly any pulled in 'Forum'.
Under 'Updates', you get the latest on what's happening with the former champ, and if you're still not satisfied with what you get here, there're plenty of links to take you to other interesting Muhammad Ali sites.
The site is tastefully designed with a clean, lean look that has a touch of class to it.
My Hero: This interactive educational Web site celebrates the achievements of heroic figures whose inspirational influence is a constant source of admiration and wonder for young people around the world.
Everyone from Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King Jr to Nelson Mandela and Albert Einstein is honoured here. But the real beauty of this site is, it allows children, parents, teachers and schools to participate in the shrine-building process by allowing them to write their own stories and create their own pages.
The 'Guestbook' lets you add your own own hero story to the project, and there's a forum section if you want to discuss the important personalities featured here with participants from around the world.
A 'Teachers Resource Room' guides educators who plan to use the 'My Hero' project in the classroom and easy links to the main sections of the site on the home page make front-door navigation a breeze.
PlaneCrashInfo.com: An interest in plane crashes may be branded as morbid, but anyone who has flown will have at one time or another imagined, even if only in a vague sense, what it'd feel like being in a plane that's about to crash.
In any case, news reports on air accidents are often hard to ignore because you could have been in that piece of twisted machinery whose frightening image has just flashed across your TV screen!
PlaneCrashInfo.com, which lists more than 2,000 air accidents in its constantly updated database, covers the subject from every angle imaginable.
First, there's 'Latest News', an air accident update section that offers the hard facts and stats on the latest plane crash incidents. Some of these include pictures from the scene.
Then you have the archived sections which include '100 Worst', 'Accident Pictures', 'Famous Deaths', 'Unusual Accidents' and 'Accident Statistics'.
Guidelines for safety and detecting 'Warning Sounds' are also discussed. And if you want to share your ideas on flight safety and other air-travel matters, you can do so in the 'Aviation Forum'.
The site has a simple design but it works.
The Vincent van Gogh Gallery: One of the most exhaustive Van Gogh resources on the Web, this site is a virtual shrine to the brilliant Dutch artist, featuring everything from his works to biographical notes and essays on his art.
A 'Site Inventory' posted on the main page informs you that there are a total of 3,703 pages featuring 873 paintings, 1,049 drawings, 152 watercolors, 10 graphic works and 132 letter sketches.
You can go straight to 'The Gallery' to view the works, or check out the paintings chronologically or by category ('Portraits', 'Self Portraits', 'The Roulin Family', 'Sunflowers').
There's a scrolling Van Gogh news-update feature and if you have gobs of memory on your PC/laptop, you can try downloading the complete paintings, the database of the complete works on CD-ROM, Van Gogh's corresponsence or postage stamps.
Despite a somewhat unimaginative layout, site creator David Brooks hasn't spared any effort to make this the first-stop site for all things Van Gogh. Pages load quite fast, including those with pictures.
