The instrument is a three manual 9 rank unit organ, one of the early Cinema organs built by the John Compton Company, who still wanted to be known as builders of church or concert organs and not so much as builders of cinema or theatre organs, this resulting in the Sunderland Compton having a rather good concert sound.
It is worth noteing that this is the only example of John Compton's work in Sunderland and surrounding area.
When installed the console was in the centre of the orchestra pit Standing on the floor, the lift was installed at a later date, probably after the orchestra was dispensed with.
The organ chambers were on the left hand side of the proscenium arch. To enter the lower or solo chamber which was some fifteen feet above floor level One had to climb a vertical ladder and enter through a hatch less than two feet square.
The blower room being the first thing to encounter which was on the left of the solo chamber housed a Discus 5 stage unit driven by a 7.5hp motor.
The organ sounded through shutters which faced the circle, first sounding into a mixing room then the entering the auditorium through a grill known as the dancing lady.
