Kayaking with the Dolphins in Yankeetown Florida

We put in at the end of 40A just east of the boat ramp where the Withlacoochee exits to the Gulf of Mexico. There is a nice little sandy beach here that is perfect for putting in kayaks. You can't miss it. There is a palm tree there that has a face carved into it. We were told that a man carved it there using a chain saw.

We paddled out into the channel and headed southward towards the barge canal where there are a few islands that are used for overnight camping. It's about 1 1/2 miles, which isn't that far. These pictures are from one of the islands. It has a nice sandy beach. The water surrounding it on low tide is about 1 foot.

In the channel we could see the water churning, and as we looked closer you could see the dolphins working the water. There were four of them. They would circle and slap their tails on the waters surface chasing their prey towards the center. Then one at a time they would enter the circle to feed. We sat and watched them for about a half an hour until they finally broke into pairs and headed in opposite directions. It was quite a sight to see.
