Inuyasha is a hanyou, having a youkai father and a human mother. He became orphaned at a very young age.
The story starts off with him being stuck on a tree because of a spell that was put on him by Kikyou. She had thought that it was him that attacked her and stole the shikon no tama (but it was really Naraku). 50 years later after that incident, a girl named Kagome was able to go back to the Sengoku Jidai through a well. She came across Inuyasha and the story starts from there...
Inuyasha can be a really stubborn and rude person, mostly having that "I don't care," "I'm strong" kind of attitude, but there are times when he shows his soft side (especially towards Kagome and Kikyou). After meeting Kagome, his kind side seemed to show more (even Kikyou thought he changed). He even made friends!!
One down side for him being a hanyou is that every new moon, he turns into a human (like a werewolf kind of thing). He loses all his youkai strength and is just a regular human like all of us. Of course with the shikon no tama, he can become a full youkai...or a real human.
