Asian Champion's Marathon battle

BECAME "ASIAN CHAMPION" winning Gold in the Third ASIAN MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP in 1992 held at Jakarta, Indonesia.

BECAME "NATIONAL MARATHON CHAMPION" for the first time in 1984 by winning Delhi Marathon and thereafter went on to run the 1985 Boston Marathon... Women were not allowed to run in the marathon (42.2 Km Run) in India before 1983 and in the world before 1978 therefore Sunita could not run marathon earlier and had to stay content with the longest distances that were available to women to run before the freedom to run the marathon came for women in India.

    · 3rd position overall in the 6th Asian Marathon Championship in 1998 in Bangkok, Thailand.

    MARATHON personal best time - 2 hours 43 minutes 33 seconds at Hauts-de-siene Marathon Paris, France in 1993.

TOTAL FULL MARATHON run until now from 1984-2005 is 75. This includes 50 gold medals (1st position); 12 silver medals (2nd position); 12 bronze medals (3rd position). She has also won 21 half marathons and run more than 200 International Races in all the continents. She has run marathons in 25 countries covering all the 4 continents.

    She stayed out of India half the time: She has been staying out of India and racing outside at an average of six months every year till 2004.

    SHALL NEVER RETIRE: At age 46 she is still a competitive runner. She plans to keep running till she dies!

    She is also a Yoga and athletic trainer, fitness consultant, speaker on sports sciences, marathon, women & children rights.

RECENTLY COMPLETED 1,10,000 KM IN RUNNING MILEAGE in a running competitive carrier is spanning a quarter of a century 1975-2005. Sunita’s racing career now spans to more than 30 years.

    Keeping body guards: In spite of being forced to always train keeping a male bodyguard for physical protection and living in an insecure, lawless and unfit Indian society she has continued to run for a quarter century. At least 10,500 Km out of her total of 110,000 Km that she has run till now have been done alongside a trained armed bodyguard carrying a machine gun to keep the males of the species away

Women had no oppurtunity to compete in Marathon in India before 1983, therefore Sunita could not compete. Even now there are less than 50 Indian women who have completed the Marathon out of the mammoth 1/2 billion that exist!
