Elsie was a very special friend who left an indelible impression on me when I met her 20 years ago. A Cocker lover, she owned a succession of Cockers over her lifetime - each one a cherished and treasured family member. Her devotion to this breed was not based on show wins or racking up incredible records, but simply because she loved this breed - their beauty, devotion and unconditional acceptance of less than perfect human beings.

Elsie was from a different era - when the world was a better, more hopeful place. She was the epitome of human decency - kind, generous, compassionate, and truly, a kindred spirit. Cocker Spaniels everywhere surely lost a friend when Elsie passed away several years ago well into her 90's.

So, tonight, when you put your Cockers to bed, please give them a biscuit and a special scratch and tell them it's from Elsie. She would have liked that!
