Even the great team of 1926 had its ups and downs but Archie Trotter knew the
Strikers of '26 had it in them. Now it is 2002 and captain Roni G is looking for
his team to rise to the occasion and start putting some good performances
together. The Strikers didn't have one of their better days on Sunday when a well
seasoned and stuck in there ways Ilam banged home 6 goals to 1. The Strikers had
a poor first half letting in 4 soft goals and only securing 1 themselves.
Because of some pig headedness by Ilam's skipper, the Strikers were not able to
bring on super sub Tony until half time. Once big Tones graced the field the
Strikers started to gel more and were looking to get back into the match, but in
true winger from Queensland (who's name escapes me at this point) form, Tony had a
brain explosion. Not since Harry Pickering was given the perfect cross from
North Shore United's Loral Hipkins in the great Chatham Cup final of 1926 had
the Sunnyside colours seen a better pass to set up the opposition for a goal.
Tony pretty much gave the goal to Ilam which knocked the juice right out of the
Strikers oranges. It was a shame really as Tony is an inspirational leader for
the Strikers and some say it is not fair to blame Tony for the loss (I agree
with Tony's mum).
So next weekend we take on Thomas and the Fat Controllers team, the Strikers
should be looking to get their season back on track and get a couple of points
clear of the dreaded A's.
See below for inspiration.
