Episode # 3
The Betrayal

Yup, here's where the major drama starts. It won't last long though. And as long as I am breathing, Annie and Jude will remain a couple. Problems will arise, but they will always be a couple and in love. And for now Ben and Meg are back burner. Gregory's amount of money is a little outrages, but Sunset always was. Oh, and it's night time now.

David and Evelyn are sitting in the Java Web drinking coffee. When he's not looking she drops a little of the 'cider' (it's actually whisky.) in her flask into her drink.

DAVID: So, earlier you said you were working. What do you do?

EVELYN: It's a secret.

DAVID: Come on. I won't tell a soul.

EVELYN: Do you promise? Swear on your life.

DAVID: I swear it.

EVELYN: Okay, I'm a writer.

DAVID: You want to keep that secret?

EVELYN: Yeah, because I use a pen name. I have a meeting with a publisher tomorrow afternoon.

DAVID: That's great. So, what, you write books?

EVELYN: It's intended to be a series of novels about a group of characters who go through dramatic, mysterious adventures. I'm trying to be Rudyard Kipling, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Melville all in one.

DAVID: So, they're period pieces, right?

EVELYN: Yeah.

DAVID: How many do you have written?

EVELYN: The first one is done and has been sent off the three publishing companies. I got a call back from two of them, both in Los Angeles. That was part of my reason for coming here. I half way through the second book.

DAVID: About how long are they? What's your pen name?

EVELYN: The first is nearly four hundred pages. The second is already at three hundred. My pen name is H. G. Tartikoff. Do you want to read the first one?

DAVID: Yeah, I'd love to. Who else knows about this?

EVELYN: Only you, so you've got to help me keep this a secret.

DAVID: I promise.

EVELYN: Okay, um, I have the first on disc with me. Do you think they'd mind if I printed that much?

DAVID: I think you're going to have a huge bill in paper.

EVELYN: Okay. You'll be the first to read it. And when you're through I want your honest opinion. Do not lie to me if you absolutely hate it.

DAVID: I will, I will.

EVELYN: I think I'm going to like having you for a friend.

DAVID: I'll take that as a compliment.

They go print out their pages and get their HUGE bill.

Bette and AJ are sitting on the sofa when the door bell rings. Bette gets up to answer it and finds Jeffrey Goodman, her first husband.

BETTE: Jeffrey? What are you doing here?

JEFFREY: I need your help, Bette. I need your help!

BETTE: Calm down, Jeffrey, and come in. What's wrong?

He falls forward into her arms with a look of horror on his face.

JEFFREY: Help!

AJ comes to try and help him, but he falls down dead with a bloody wound in his back.

AJ: He's dead.

BETTE: My God.

Casey, Sara, and Nick walk into the Deep. Sara sees Jude at the bar downing a shot of something.

SARA: Jude, hi.

JUDE: Hi, Sara. How are you?

SARA: Um apparently better than you are. What's wrong?

JUDE: It's nothing?

SARA: Annie gettin' you down? Anyway, please, brighten up soon so you can come to our wedding.

JUDE: What wedding?

CASEY: Ours. We're engaged.

JUDE: That's great, Sara. I am extremely happy for you.

SARA: Hey, cheer up, I don't like seeing a friend so depressed looking. Oh, and you need to meet my brother, Nick. Nick, this is a friend of mine Jude Cavanaugh.

JUDE: It's nice to meet you Nick. Um, I hate to be rude, but I do have to go talk to my red head.

CASEY: No problem. Take it easy.

NICK: It was nice to meet you.

SARA: Bye, Jude.

He smiles and leaves.

NICK: He didn't look too good.

CASEY: I wonder what's wrong with him?

NICK: So, Meg's husband owns this place?

SARA: Yeah, and an Internet coffee bar called the Java Web. He's a big entrepreneur.

NICK: Can I have a dance with my sister? Does her intended mind?

CASEY: Go ahead. I'll order some drinks.

NICK: I'll have a greyhound.

SARA: Usual.

CASEY: Great.

Casey goes to get drinks as Sara and Nick dance.

SARA: So, what do you think of Casey?

NICK: He seems nice. So did Tim Truman.

SARA: Nick, don't. He is a great man. He saved my life, you know. More than once and in more than one way.

NICK: I know and I don't think he's going to turn out to be like Tim.

SARA: Thank you. And you're impression of Sunset Beach?

NICK: Nice place. I see what appeals to you about it. Do you have a date yet?

SARA: It has been an engagement of less than a week. We have no plans yet except that we know we're getting married.

NICK: When do you want to get married?

SARA: In a few months. I was thinking May.

They dance more, talk more, the night goes by well.

Meg and Ben step inside the house after their honeymoon.

BEN: Um, do you mind if I head over to the Deep for a bit? I have some things to take care of if I'm to take Benjy to work with me tomorrow. But, I was thinking you, he, and I could have lunch together at the Shock Wave.

MEG: Lunch would be great. And no, I don't mind if you go to the Deep, I think I'll go with you. As much fun as I had on our honeymoon, I missed Sunset Beach.

BEN: Well then, a night on the town is exactly what you need.

MEG: I love you, Mr. Evans.

BEN: Oh, Mrs. Evans, I love you more today then I did yesterday.

They head out after putting their things back.

At the Deep Ben goes into the office and Meg finds a table in the back, which happens to be right next to the one Maria and Ross are sharing.

MEG: Maria. Hello.

MARIA: Meg, I didn't know you were back yet. I thought it would be later. Um, this is Ross English, a friend of mine. Ross, this is Meg Evans. She's Benjy's stepmother.

ROSS: It's nice to meet you, Meg.

MEG: You too. So, how has Benjy been? Is he with Carmen?

MARIA: Yeah, actually he's with both mama and Ricardo.

MEG: That's good.

Sara walks by and sees Meg.

SARA: Meg, you're back.

MEG: Yeah, we got back about an hour ago.

SARA: You are never going to believe who is here.

MEG: Who?

SARA: Oh, it's the best. Oh, hi Maria.

MARIA: Good evening, Sara. This is Ross English. Ross, this is Meg's sister, Sara.

ROSS: Hi.

MEG: Um, Maria, I'll see you tomorrow morning.

SARA: Goodnight, Maria, you too Ross.

Meg and Sara walk off.

ROSS: So, that's who Ben married? Are you okay?

MARIA: I'm fine. Really, I am. Meg's my friend, she's a good person.

Meg and Sara walk onto the pain floor, but Sara stops her on the stairs.

MEG: Why'd we stop?

SARA: Close your eyes.

MEG: Why?

SARA: Because who's here is a surprise.

MEG: Fine, fine.

Meg closes her eyes and Sara leads her to the table where Casey and Nick are.

SARA: Look who I found on my way back from the bathroom.

CASEY: Welcome home. Why are your eyes closed?

MEG: Sara says they have to be.

Sara points at Nick and mouths surprise.

NICK: Does marriage agree with you?

MEG: Oh my God, I know that voice. Nick! This is the best thing to come home to.

They talk, Ben meets him, the night goes nicely.

Annie is walking on the beach and Cole catches up to her.

COLE: Hi.

ANNIE: Oh, hi. You look kind of down.

COLE: Caitlin and I had a fight.

ANNIE: So did Jude and I.

COLE: What about? If you don't mind me asking.

ANNIE: Um, I filed for divorce today, from Gregory. I am asking for five million dollars. Jude took that as saying that I don't think he can support me. I mean, it's not like Gregory is going to need the money. He was sentenced to forty years without parole. And I thought about Sean and Caitlin, they have fat trust finds. And Gregory is worth $6.2 billion. What Jude wouldn't let me explain was that he has a dangerous job and I worry about him. If something happens I want to be secure.

COLE: I know what you mean. I get that. I'm just happy that if I hadn't come home, Caitlin and Trey would have been taken care of for life.

ANNIE: What did you and she argue about?

COLE: I come in, give her a kiss, and she starts in that I should get a job so that we can have our own house. Basically what she said was that she was ashamed of me. Not in those words, but that was the gist of it. She never thought poorly of me before when I was a construction worker. Why now all of the sudden?

They stop walking because they realize they've ended up at the grotto. Annie walks in slowly, Cole follows.

ANNIE: There's a lot of memories in this place.

COLE: This is where Caitlin and I...

ANNIE: Yeah, I know. I tried to kill you in here with a rock once.

COLE: [With a chuckle.] Yeah. Gregory tried some stuff here too.

They sit in the sand next to each other.

ANNIE: I don't want anymore bad stuff. I have changed. They say love makes you do odd things.

COLE: You love Jude.

ANNIE: And you love Caitlin.

COLE: I always have.

They look at each other.

COLE: But things do change.

He kisses Annie. She kisses him back. They begin to make love in the sand.

Jude knocks on the Richards' door and Caitlin answers it.

JUDE: Have you seen Annie?

CAITLIN: No, I can't say that I have.

JUDE: Is something wrong?

She walks upstairs into her bedroom, he follows.

JUDE: Caitlin, is something wrong?

CAITLIN: I should be asking you the same thing.

They sit on the bed.

JUDE: I just need to find Annie.

CAITLIN: It's funny. Most of us never thought anyone would actually want to be with Annie.

JUDE: I do. I just hope I didn't screw it up.

CAITLIN: You two get in a fight?

JUDE: Yeah, she's filing for divorce and is asking for five million dollars. Like she doesn't think I can support her.

CAITLIN: See, and my problem with Cole is that I know he can't support me. When I got married I thought I'd have my own house to live in, a husband who had a job. Annie's lucky to have you. I just hope she can realize it.

They look at each other and she kisses him. They fall back on the bed and begin to make love.

Scenes of Cole with Annie and Jude with Caitlin proceed to the tune of Heather Nova's "Blood of Me"*. Cole's shirt is off, and Annie's is close to gone, same with Jude. Caitlin's robe is nearly off. Annie and Jude moan out each other's names and stops when they realize what they're doing.

ANNIE: Cole, stop. I can't do this. It just, it just doesn't feel right. You aren't Jude.

COLE: I understand. I think everyone was wrong about you, Annie. You aren't a bad person.

ANNIE: Thanks.

Jude sits up and looks down at the floor, starts to button up his shirt. Caitlin pulls her robe completely on.

CAITLIN: What's wrong?

JUDE: You aren't Annie. This is the biggest mistake I have made in a long time. No offense to you. But no matter what she does, I love Annie.

CAITLIN: Okay.

JUDE: I'm sorry, I have to go to her. I have to apologize.

CAITLIN: Don't be sorry for anything. At least you can be faithful to Annie.

JUDE: I am sorry. For how I know this will make her feel when I tell her.

CAITLIN: You're going to tell her?

JUDE: I have to. We promised complete honesty with each other.

CAITLIN: Bye, Jude.

He leaves.

Ricardo enters the mission to see Antonio.

ANTONIO: Ricardo, what are you doing here?

RICARDO: We're having dinner tomorrow night as a welcome to your first new house on your own for Maria and Benjy. Mama was going to call you, but I decided I'd come by and let you know.

ANTONIO: How are you?

RICARDO: I'm okay. I'm going into business for myself. I'll be Sunset Beach's newest private detective.

ANTONIO: Good for you.

RICARDO: So, you'll be at dinner tomorrow? At seven?

ANTONIO: Of course. It'll be nice, the five of us as a family.

RICARDO: I know what you mean. I've come to a realization.

ANTONIO: What's that?

RICARDO: Gabi wasn't in love with me.

ANTONIO: She loves you, Ricardo.

RICARDO: I know she loves me, but she isn't in love with me. She loves the idea that I could forgive her for accusing me of rape and falling in love with her.

ANTONIO: She started to believe good things can happen to anyone.

RICARDO: Exactly. No, she was in love with you. And if you weren't a priest, I'd gladly step aside for you two. No hard feelings, and if you were to get married, I'd still want to be best man.

ANTONIO: Thank you.

RICARDO: You're still in love with her.

ANTONIO: I always will be.

They smile at each other.

The police have finished collecting evidence at Bette's house. It's now very late at night, and a drunk Evelyn is passed out upstairs when the phone rings. Bette calls up to her.

BETTE: Evelyn, phone for you!

EVELYN: [Slurring words.] This had better be good.

DAVID: I loved it. And how dare you leave it hanging like that. Right when you finish the next one, I want to read it.

EVELYN: Huh? Oh, David, hi. You finished it already?

DAVID: Yeah, it's fantastic.

EVELYN: You aren't lying?

DAVID: I told you I'd give you the truth.

EVELYN: Great, then be here at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Good night.

She hangs up the phone and goes back to sleep.

There is a knock on Bette's door, she answers it.

BETTE: What is it with people calling and coming to visit at all hours of the night.

She opens the door.

EDDIE: Hi, Bette.

BETTE: Oh, sweet Jesus, I'm looking at a ghost.

EDDIE: No, I'm alive. And I knew if anyone in town missed me it would be you.

BETTE: My, sweet Big G, what happened to you, Cheekbones?

EDDIE: It's a long story, which I don't remember much of.

BETTE: I'm wide awake now.

They sit and talk.

Jude is walking along the beach and approaches the grotto to see Annie and Cole, buttoning up his shirt, coming out of the grotto. He runs towards Cole and punches him. Cole punches him back in the nose, lip, and eye. Annie pulls Cole off of Jude.

ANNIE: Stop it, stop it. Oh, God, Jude, you're bleeding.

JUDE: You son of a bitch, Cole, you slept with Annie.

ANNIE: Cole, go home, let me talk to him. Jude, calm down, okay? Let me take you home and get you cleaned up. I don't want these to get infected.

JUDE: Don't touch me.

ANNIE: Jude, what did we agree? To always talk about things. Please, let's go home and talk.

JUDE: Okay.

ANNIE: Thank you. Let me help you up.

She does. Jude looks at Cole with disgust as he walks off with Annie. Cole, being watched by someone, heads off towards Caitlin.
Blood of Me:*

Big ring around the moon
It's gonna rain hard soon

I know you're gonna leave
It's like a storm inside

You're the blood of me
You're the truth that hurts
You're the memory
You're the drug that works

Why do people change
When hearts, hearts, still beat the same?

You're the blood of me
You're the truth that hurts
You're the memory, yeah
You're the drug that works

I don't believe you when you tell me
I don't believe you when you hold me
I don't believe you
You're my medicine
I don't believe you when you f*** me

You're the blood of me
You're the blood of me
You're the truth that hurts
You're the memory, yeah
You're the memory
You're the drug that works

You're the blood of me, yeah
You're the blood of me
You're the truth that hurts, hurts
You're the memory, yeah
You're the memory
You're the drug that works

Big ring around the moon
Gonna rain hard soon
