Part 1: Malaya

Rich left it until the middle of March before jetting off to catch up with Caitlin via Malaya and Singapore. His first report came in on March 16th.

Hi Everyone!

As promised here is the first email from my world tour. I left London last night (15Mar) and have just arrived 10200km later in KL, Malaysia. I can only say that it is really really really hot and humid and my $3.50 room does not have aircon! what it does have is a whole load of Mosi's! The flight was great (I watched the same film about 3 times!). also I had loads of space since it was not full!

Everyone here seems really friendly so I'm going to head out and look for some food and drink!

Sarah will be ariving sometime in the early hours of Saturday morning, so hopefully we won't have too many problems meeting up. Then it is off the the north and the Islands. I can't describe how beautiful it is here even in downtown KL!

Must Dash now, I'm starving!

Speak to you all soon,
Rich

..quickly followed by another the next day.

Hello Again!

The trip from the Airport to KLwas fine, I met a guy from Singapore called Mike who was a composer. The coach dropped me right to the door of the nicer of the two possible hostels. They were really nice an gave me a double room with a fan. I have now up-graded to air con and a shower! still $10 GBP per night but I will split the cost with Sarah!

I ended up staying in on my first night. A load of guys were watching "Nottinghill" so I wathced it as well. Loads of people then went to bed which left these two couples, I ended up staying up till midnight chatting to them and having a great evening, they'd all been traveling for about 6 months and thought it very amusing that I had just arrived. I also met two guys from Japan, and had fun trying to speak to them since they didn't really speak English! Amazing what a few sketches can do! Sleeping wasn't so good. a combination of 30 DegC plus and Jet lag meant that I didn't get to sleep until 4.00 a.m. I ended up getting up around 11.00 and mooching around until I sorted out changing rooms!

After that I checked my email and met a girl called Maria. We decided to head off around the city and see what we could see. We had breaky/brunch in a cafe (ok so I had an egg and sausages with coffee, I was hungry and it was the first thing I saw!). The we went up the KL tower, it is the 4th highest single structure needle in the world (450m or something). The view was amazing, it is right next to the Twin towers (the tallest building in the world). And I have some great photos.

After the tower we visited the Golden Triangle which is a famous shopping centre / Leicester Square KL style! It was o.k. but nothing too special. Still we stopped for an Ice Tea and potato skins.

Tonight we are off to find some authentic Malaysia Curry and a bar - possibly dropping in to the Irish pub in China Town to have a quick one for St. Paddy!

Sarah arrives at 2.30 a.m. .... hopefully without any hitches! What ever happens I still have to wait up to let her in to the hostel! Ouch!

Righty Ho. Time to go. Hope your all hving fun without me!
Rich

He finished off Malaya on the 3rd of April

Hello All,

Well it has been quite a time since I last filled you in on my tour of Malaysia.
Over the last 9 days I have been jungle walking in the cameron highlands and back in to Kuala Lumpur. From KL I headed up to the north to Kota Bahru, this is a very strictly Muslim town (and region) mand considered the heart of true Malay culture. While I was there I ate food from the night market stall. Thnis involves selecting your food from a vast array of curries in the market place. This is then loaded into a paper cone al la fish and chips, which you then each with your hands (messy). All this is done while whating the locals watching TV in the monsoon like rain with water pouring down on to it (at this point I'm checking that I am wearing rubber soled shoes!

After a day in KB I went over to the Perhentian Islands. These are truly paradise. I got in some body boarding BBQing and snorkeling with the Sharks (really!) and turtels in the coral reefs. I was only going to stay for 3 days and ended up there a week! I met up with a great bunch on the island, and we made a real effort to befriend the locals. We all got on famously and ended up having some great laughs till 3 in the morning every night (this is real "All around the beach fire with the guitars country"!).

Now I'm in Melaka which was once the most powerful city in SE Asia. The history here is amasing and I have cut singapore out of my schedule to get another day here. That will mean I have 6 hours to spemnd in the Raffles while waiting for my flight out of signapore on Wednesday!

I must dash now since I have been on the internet for some time now. I will reply to all my emails in the next couple of days... apologies to everyone who has sent them.... there was no email on the Perhentian Islands (no electrcity either).

Toodle Doo
Rich
