The Leck family, from which this line is derived, seem not to have hailed from Patterdale in the immediate period prior to the marriage of Mary Kirkland to John Leck in 1794. Mary, the daughter of Charles Kirkland and Sarah Amos, was probably born in Patterdale, or the surrounding area. Her parents had married in Barton in 1758 with their first child, Sarah, being baptized in Patterdale later that year. Prior to 1758 there is no record of the Kirklands in Patterdale.
