These five musical talents first started working togheter in a South
London living room they referred to as "the dregs of the earth."
Succeeding in turning the tables on the London club scene, Republica's
vocalist, Saffron, describes their music as being "techno-pop punk rock."
Born in Nigeria with an exotic array of nationalites, Saffron found
similar spirits in the songwritting tean of Tim Doreen and Andy Todd(both
on keyboards). Doreen had achieved some success of his own with a
12-inch record called Weekender, and Todd's credits include
producing songs fron Bjork to Barbara Streisand. Lead guitarist Jonny
Male joined the arrangement of keyboards and vocals to add his piercing
guitar rifts along with his extending experience with former band, Bow
Wow Wow. Drummer Dave Barber, an ex-Adam Ant member, further dramatizes
the essential fury in what is Republica. The group's first major release
on Deconstruction/RCA came together in just three years and was solely
signed on the strength of one track, "Out of Darkness." Working long
hours in their own studio, now in a more desirable part of London,
Republica's self titled album and radio hit, "Ready to Go," is definately
going.
