Greg Allman
In front of a near sellout crowd at the Meadows Music Theatre the Allman Brothers took the stage. Opening up with Don’t Want You No More the fans were on their feet. Along with psychedelic lighting and mushroom backdrops the band ripped through favorites including Not My Cross To Bear, Statesboro Blues, Blue Skies, Dreams, Back Where It All Began, Soul Shine, and Revival. The fans were dancing and singing throughout the near three hour show. It was a Grateful Dead-like atmosphere with the new edition of Jack Pearson on guitar and Oteil Burbridge on bass. I was unsure of how the show would be without Warren Haynes and Allan Woody who recently left the Allmans to dedicate their time to Govt Mule. Pearson was very good but seemed timid on alot of the leads. His slide wasn’t up to par with Haynes but give him credit, this show was still early in the tour. Burbridge on bass was excellent. He played a funk/rock style bass solo that was so quick it was like he was playing lead guitar. Dickey Betts was in top form playing more leads than usual. Greg Allman’s voice sounded great. They ended the show with Whipping Post with a video screen backdrop that flashed photos of Duanne Allman, Ronnie Van Zant, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, etc. Overall a very good show. They give you your money’s worth.
