The band jammed for over two hours to a cheering crowd. They played nearly all of the new record as well as tunes from their long career. Lead vocalist Zak Stevens belted out each song and encouraged the headbangers in the audience to join in. Stevens has one of the most powerful voices in the business. He was joined by his bandmates for some serious counterpoint on "Chance" and "The Hourglass". Sorry Wayne and Garth, but this stuff blows away "Bohemian Rhapsody". Guitarist Chris Caffery performed a sparkling version of the instrumental "Temptation Revelation" which was followed by Jon Oliva on keys and vocals for the classic "When The Crowds Are Gone". Oliva, the mountain king, later treated us to "Paragons of Innocence" which had never been played live before. Guitarist Al Pitrelli wailed on "The Storm". Drummer Jeff Plate and bassist Johnny Lee Middleton kept a tight rhythm section. The biggest surprise of the night was the oldie "Sirens".
The combination of Savatage's music and lyrics bring you on a serious rock journey that you will never forget. The music can be described as metal, hard rock, progressive, and orchestral all in the same song. The words are very visual and they tell of man on an endless quest for harmony in the world. They warn of evil and the hypocrisy of man, but also provide hope for the future. The lyrics are usually part of an epic story. Check out their liner notes for some mind bending stuff!
Pick up the CD on Atlantic Records. Don't be surprised if you have to ask your local record store to special order it. Savatage is one of the best kept secrets in rock and roll today.
