Ain't Comin' Home: Is the first song we wrote
together as a band. On this one, Tom sings lead and Jen sings backup.
We actually performed this one at our first show. A highlight of
this song is listening to Scott's "Vai" type solo.
Stone Heart: This song is a song that Todd wrote
a couple of years ago and was jamming on it with Ryan one day during practice
and the rest of the band liked it and starting jamming too. Jen wrote
the lyrics but Tom came up with the Stone Heart concept.
Walk Away: This was another song that Todd
had wrote a while ago and pretty much the same thing happened. Only,
Tom was singing it orinigally and he was singing about living in Decatur...didn't
quite have the same ring to it.
Would It Be So Bad: Another one of our first
songs writing together. This one started out as an instrumental intro
piece into "Jenny Says." Tom sang "Jenny Says" and wanted a little
instrumental piece before it in the same key so that he could hear what
to sing easier. It turned into a little piece, where originally Tom
was "rapping" to (which is my personal favorite rap of all time) but then
eventually added lyrics and a melody. After a little tweaking, it
turned into what it is today.
Deja Blue: This is a song that Scott wrote
one day while playing on his dad's guitar. He brought it to us and
then we started jamming on it and worked out some parts for it. I
came up with the middle section where Scott has his solo, but Scott wrote
the rest of the music, and Jen wrote the lyrics.
Too Good To Believe: Another one of Scott's creations.
Originally, Tom sang this song, since he wrote the lyrics, but then decided
that Jen should sing it just to make it easier, and to give her something
to do!
Thursday Morning: Once again, Scott wrote this
song and brought it to the group. Jen wrote the lyrics. You might
notice that in the begining of the song there are actually three guitars
playing. One electric, one acoustic, and the last acoustic with Nashville
tuning.
If
You Could See: This is Todd's first attempt at lyrics.
Todd wrote the song at the end of 1998 and brought it to the group and
they like it, so we used it. The song is about Clark Kent and how
he is in love with Lois, but she doesn't love him (hence why we all call
this song the superman song).
Broken: A song that Todd wrote as an intro
into Walk Away. The name is "Broken" because during recording, Todd
broke a piano string.
Life Cycle: A song that Scott wrote that
we thought sounded fine without vocals, so we used it. It has three sections
to it to represent the three parts of life: birth, living, and death.
I
Can't: This was the last song we wrote before recording
and it was written just 2 weeks before we went to the studio. It
started as a jam with Ryan and Todd, and then the rest of the band joined
in and Jen starting singing, and it was cool. Eventually we layed
out a chorus and verse type flow and then it became what it is now.
