"Sessions" Mixes
Sessions was an album compiled by EMI in 1984 that would be,
just like Anthology, a compilation of unreleased tracks by The Beatles.
When the album was already pressed, packaged
and ready to be shipped to the stores, and the single Leave My Kitten Alone
was already playing on the British radio, the project was cancelled,
mainly due to the legal disagreement
between the remaining Beatles (and Yoko) and EMI only settled years after,
and also because Paul McCartney rejected it.
Although officially unreleased, this album has been bootlegged several times.
The album would
comprise the following tracks:
Side One: Side Two:
Come And Get It How Do You Do It?
Leave My Kitten Alone Besame Mucho
Not Guilty One After 909
I'm Looking Through You If You've Got Troubles
What's The New Mary Jane That Means A Lot
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Mailman, Bring Me No More Blues
Christmastime Is Here Again
Single:
Leave My Kitten Alone / Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
George Martin and Geoff Emerick produced new mixes of all songs to this
album. In this process, most of the songs were reprocessed and/or edited.
All Sessions tracks ended up on Anthology (except Christmastime...,
that is on the Free As A Bird single, in extended form). And most
of the times, the Sessions mixes, edited, were used, raising complaints
of hardcore Beatlefans that expected for the unedited takes found on bootlegs to
be legitimately released.
The current situation of the Sessions tracks:
- Come And Get It: Issued on Anthology 3, original mix
made in 1969.
- Leave My Kitten Alone: Issued on Anthology 1. Mix made
for Sessions, has a strange stereo separation that seems to be mock
stereo.
- Not Guilty: The mix made for Sessions, issued on Anthology
3, has a second guitar solo and a line of the lyric edited, and fades
earlier.
- I'm Looking Through You: Issued on Anthology 2.
- What's The New Mary Jane: The Sessions mix, issued on
Anthology 3, has the long end section edited, new sound effects
added, and lines of the song in the end section, differing from the mixes
made by John Lennon in 1968.
- How Do You Do It: Issued on Anthology 1, the Sessions
mix has the last line of the lyric changed.
- Besame Mucho: The Sessions mix, issued on Anthology
1 has the end section extended by editing to end in a fadeout.
- One After 909: The Sessions mix was not used. A new mix
was made to Anthology 1 instead, in this new mix the edit of the
takes was done differently.
- If You've Got Troubles: The Sessions mix, edited, wasn't
used. A new mix of the whole song was made for Anthology 2.
- That Means A Lot: Issued on Anthology 2.
- While My Guitar Gently Weeps: Issued on Anthology 3.
The end was extended by editing and goes into a fadeout. The original take
has a cold ending.
- Mailman Bring Me No More Blues: Issued on Anthology 3.
Lines of the song were rearranged.
- Christmastime Is Here Again: The Sessions version, which
lasted less than a minute, was not used. The song appears much longer,
in the Christmas messages compilation issued on the Free As A Bird
single.
- Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da: Issued on Anthology 3.
