The Beatles have released the third and last Anthology containing material from the White Album to Let It Be. I have naturally bought all three Anthologies.
The first Anthology contains live and studio material from the early years in Hamburg to the first succesful albums and tours. The best live material I think is from their performance in Stockholm 1963. You also find their performance in the Royal Variety Show 1963 when John Lennon said:
"Would the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands? And the rest of you, if you'll just rattle your jewellry."
The second Anthology reaches to the period when they had stopped touring and concentrated on studio recordings. You'll here rehearsals and different takings from these recordings, but I find the finished albums better. This sounds like other bootlegs with material that just wasn't good enough to end up on the finished record. Maybe you'll disagree with me!
There are also two completely new recordings on these records. On the first there is "Free as a Bird" and on number two "Real Love". Both are remixtures of demo tapes that John Lennon made before his death. Now they have added the vocals and instruments of the other three Beatles. Sounds to me however mostly like John's "Double Phantasy" period and not like the real Beatles. Here you may disagree with me again!

Finally the third Anthology was a bit of a disappointment. Number two was
much better than number one, so I expected number three to be even better.
Especially with tunes from the White Album, Abbey Road and Let It Be.
However the White Album part was mostly half finished songs and demos.
What's the point of releasing dumped versions of songs that are ten times better in their final versions? My judgement became a little milder as I listened to the last CD with songs from Abbey Road and Let It Be. They were quite amusing and of good quality. To buy these records i still think you should be a die hard Beatle fan. Anyway, click on the image to the left to see more of Anthology 3. |
