Budapest Hungary 8 August 95:

The following report was mailed me by my friend Thomas Horvath, Hungarian now living in Munich. I met him in Prague before he went home for the Budapest concert, and finally his report is here, for you:

The day of 8.8.95 was the very first concert of The Rolling Stones in Budapest, capital of Hungary. A lot of Stones fans had waited for 32 years. The sold-out concert was in "Nepstadion", a stadium built in the early 50's with a capacity of 80.000 people.

It was a very hot day in Budapest - about 31 degrees C, but hard rain was forecasted for the evening. All Hungarian newspapers were filled with articles and photos about the Stones. The band residence was in the noble hotel "Kempinsky" for three days.

After two support acts the Stones were on at 21:35. NOT FADE AWAY was a great opener. The audience had not seen the Stones before, and was on fire. After TUMBLING DICE Mick said some Hungarian greetings: "jo este't Budapest" (good evening Budapest).

IT's ALL OVER NOW finished, and then the rain came, as forecasted. Fortunately it wasn't so heavy raining, as during the second concert in Paris on the 1.7.95. Because of the weather the acoustic set was shorter. ANGIE was the only song played. I hoped - after the Munich concert - they would play "Shine A Light" again, but they didn't.

After GIMME SHELTER Lisa got a great applause. Keith gave us BEFORE THEY MAKE ME RUN and SLIPPING AWAY. After SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL the rain stopped, and the "greatest hits" part was finished in nice weather.

The concert in Budapest was so great, like the three Wembley-concerts. 32 years of waiting for the Stones in Hungary was not in vain.

This is the set list of Budapest 8.8.95:

1. Not Fade Away (at 21:35)
2. Tumbling Dice

The Rolling Stones (2 hours 25 minutes)
------------------

At 21:42 exactly the big bangs started, and it was time to enter `The Lounge'. This was the third time for me, and I had the impression that the lighting for the beginning had changed a bit since Paris -- although that could have been a function of being right up close to the stage (just a few rows of people behind Wilco, although we didn't know that until we saw his `Dead Flowers' banner!).

I really enjoyed the performance of Not Fade Away, and it seemed from the beginning as if the guys were pretty relaxed and enjoying themselves from the outset. Tumbling Dice was met with a mighty roar, and everybody seemed to be singing along. What has now become the standard set opening of You Got Me Rocking, It's All Over Now, Sparks Will Fly and Satisfaction followed, and the intensity factor seemed to be on the increase all the time.

Being up close we were able to follow everything on stage, and the reported animosity between Ronnie and Keith from last week seems to have been patched up as they both seemed to be having a great time together, trading salvos all over the place. However, it struck me that Keith seemed prepared to let Ronnie take the centre stage for the majority of the show, with Keith happiest at the back, either standing in front of Charlie's kit, or hanging around near Darryl.

After Satisfaction, things quietened down a bit and we were treated (and that's the right word) to a splendid Beast Of Burden. Sadly, only Angie was done in the acoustic formation, but it was fine nonetheless. Shine A Light followeled, and that was a `new' one for me on this tour, so it was great to hear it.

Next up was Like A Rolling Stone, and I have to admit that I'm growing tired of this particular song. Maybe if they put it into rotation it wouldn't be so bad, but I don't think it deserves to be a staple of the set (not when there are so many great Stones songs missing from the set-list!!). However, the crowd appeared to really like it -- maybe the Bob Dylan fan-club was in!?!

Having bet that they would play Heartbreaker and Monkey Man, they actually played Rock And A Hard Place and Monkey Man, so I was only half wrong. I'm probably alone in thinking that RAAHP is not that great a song, and that almost anything else would be preferable (even several other things from Steel Wheels!). However, they did play it with brio. Monkey Man, on the other hand, is a classic, and I don't understand why this isn't part of the fixed set. Lisa Fisher again got to stretch herself on this one -- that's quite some voice she has, amongst other assets!!

A ripping I Go Wild was next, and then Mick invited the crowd to sing along on Miss You. Having already determined the crowd mix earlier ("Are there people here tonight from Muenster? How about Schuettorf ... there's bound to be a few of you. The Ruhr Gebiet (the Ruhr area)? Holland?" followed by ecstatic cheering and the chant of "Holland, Holland, ..."), Mick first asked in German, and then English, and then apologised that he didn't know how to say it in Dutch, but pointed out that, "I'll show you where you have to join in." This was a big crowd pleaser!

I think it was after this that Mick again attempted to say something to the crowd but got drowned out by Charlie giving his kit a good whacking, on which Mick commented, "Yes, Charlie, they still work!"

Finally, they headed into Honky Tonk Women, and full marks to the camera operators on this one, they must have a good eye to spot the interesting faces in the crowd -- although the first girl who was flashed up on the screen had more than she bargained for: sitting topless on her boyfriend's shoulders she certainly didn't expect to have her charms shown off to the 80,000 crowd, and she quickly dived for cover.

Then it was time for Keith to step forward and play some rock-'n-roll, and it was a 100 m.p.h. version of Connection that followed. After that, Keith said something like, "That was real rock-'n'-roll, the way it should be, and this next one isn't. <pause> Now, they don't know what I'm going to do next. I know what I'm going to do next, but they don't." Eventually the situation was resolved, and Keith played a really heartfelt version of Slipping Away.

I've said it in an earlier review, and I'll say it again, but this really is the highlight of the show for me, and Keith genuinely deserved the enormous ovation that followed. Standing alone at the front of the stage, he said, "I want to thank you all very much." He then turned and started back towards his guitar tech. to change guitar, but after a few steps, turned and came back to the mic. and said, "And I really mean that," and it was obvious from his face that he meant every word.

The final roller-coaster ride was as exciting as always, and the playing during the SFM to JJF section was ferocious. Keith finally elected to come down and meet the fans during JJF, and he seemed to stay there for ages, acknowledging everyone in the vicinity, and he looked as happy as a pig in shit the entire time. At 00:07, it was all over, and it was time to contemplate the trudge back to the bus. Overall, the show had been a barn-stormer -- I would change one or two songs, but wouldn't we all? If things are this good at Hockenheim next Saturday, I'll be one happy chappie.

Berlin Germany 17 August 95:

Hi folks, just a setlist and a few remarks on a spectacular concert. The party at the Honky Tonk might be still going on; lots of nice people there, even from the Internet circle. I have to go home 450 km to go to Hockenheim tomorrow.

Great night, Mick brought Ronnie a cigarette during Sparks will Fly; on the video screen at the end of Honky Tonk women and between Brown Sugar and JJF, we had the picture of a man, whose head was wrapped in plaster. Does anyone know, who he was? It might be one of the workers, who fell down the stage during the process of building the backbone of the stage. One Berlin paper reported, that one of the roadies was hospitalised after such an incident the day before the concert. Maybe it was just some kind of tribute.

Weather was hot, band was even hotter, audience was alright, but I have seen better audiences.

Hockenheim Ring Germany 19 August 95:

Hi,just back from Hockenheim.

It was a somehow strange experience of seeing two Cobra-stages on one evening. Passing down the A6 from Darmstadt to Hockenheim, we could see a half-erected Cobra-stage for Tuesday's concert in Mannheim, just near the motorway. The stage for last night's show was only 25 km farther south on the Hockenheim-Ring, famous for its Formula One Grand Prix Races every year. Playing two shows in 4 days, in just a 25 km distance to each other is the result of a struggle between two local promoters to get the show. The promoter for Mannheim wanted to do Hockenheim, but did not bid enough money. So he retried and got a 2nd show in Mannheim instead, as the Ring was not available for him.

Going down there was easy, parking was at a local airport and a shuttle service was being set up for the show. The weather was hot, hot, hot.

Having arrived there early, we made our way to the front row, stage right again. The arena was huge, capacity of nearly 100.000 people. I reckon. As it was pretty hot, security passed water in plastic cups to the people in the front, which helped a bit, but not very much. At about 6 pm you were not able to move, no way getting out of the crowd to buy drinks or food, so you had to rely on the water coming in from the front.

Big Country were on at 7.30 pm and did their one-hour show. They were not bad, but I really was relieved, when they started Hey Hey My My (Neil Young Tune), as it was the last tune in their set.

Security had a good look at people pushing their way to the front, and there were quite some of them, making it a very unpleasant stay in the front row. When someone pushed too hard, he or she was taken out by security stuff, being applauded by a lot of the real fans, who would like to watch a show without fights for place.

A lot of people fainted and there must have been a case of very serious illness just in the front row stage center. 20 minutes before showtime, security and doctors rushed to that place. It took them 10 minutes to come back with two people in a very bad state, one of them seemed to have been operated on the spot, as he had all kinds of medical things applied to him, blood all over the body. We later heard, that he suffered a heart attack or a stroke, the other guy suffered definitely a heart attack.

The Stones were on at around 9.15 pm, Cobra spitting fire et. al. They seemed to be in a very good mood, Jagger laughing loudly before and after Sparks will Fly. When he said hello to people from neighbouring towns, Keith must have said something to him about where he was from, which could not be heard, but Jagger answered laughingly, that he did not know where he was from. He even made a reference to Damon Hill before Spaks will fly (We lasted longer on this pitch than Damon Hill did). Before Satisfaction he mentioned to the band, that they did not need to hurry, as they had time....

Jagger seemed to be kissing Ronnie during Sparks will fly, I could not really see it from my position, but it looked like it. Other people noticed that as well, as they made references to it.

When coming around to the right side of the stage during Satisfaction, somebody threw two T-Shirts on stage, which Jagger returned into the crowd.

After Honky Tonk Women, when the video-screen shows the girsl of the audience, Jagger went down to one bespectacled girl, kneeled down and kissed her as well. The camera stayed on her face, when Jagger returned and you could see, that she was wiping her mouth in disgust, making the audience cheer very loudly.

Usual introductions of the Stones by Jagger (Chique Charlie W, wild and mad Ronnie, Joker Keith). Ronnie introduced Jagger as the nicest man while he's asleep, which made Jagger grin.

Before Miss You, Jagger wanted us to sing real loud, as there were so many of us. Singing by the audience was a bit rough, but after the song was over, the front row started to go on a bit with the ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh, so Jagger came back and directed it for a minute or so. He then said, that we were a super audience.

During the "Shake your funky bum" section of Miss You, he first gave a slight and then a french kiss to Lisa, was turned over by her and beaten on his behind twice by Lisa for his nasty behaviour. He looked like a caught schoolboy during that sequence.

All in all, a very nice concert, I'd say 9 out of 10, not as good as Schuettorf or Berlin, but much better than Munich.

Set List:

1) Not Fade Away
2) Tumbling Dice
3) You Got Me Rocking
4) It's All Over Now
5) Sparks will Fly
6) Satisfaction
7) Beast of Burden (restarted after two chords)
8) Sweet Virginia
9) Angie
10) Like A Rolling Stones
11) Rock And A Hard Place

16) Honky Tonk Women
17) Before they Make Me Run

20) Street Fighting Man (Keith out right, Ronnie and Mick left)
21) Start Me Up
22) It's only Rock and Roll
23) Brown Sugar
24) Jumping Jack Flash

After the shows we met a lot of people from Berlin, Hamburg, Australia, UK, Heidelberg etc. We had a short look at the masters of the tape of the show and were informed, that it was a complete recording.

After that, the ordeal began: You could not get out of the arena, as only two small gates had been opened. Getting out took till 1am for us, 75 minutes after the show finished. Then it back to the shuttle service, which was operated very inprofessional. It took us till 2.35 am, to get to the car, as only a couple of buses were running and the drivers did not go to the place, where they were supposed to pick people up, but started picking them up whereever they wanted, so the buses arrived 2/3 full at the bus stop. A lot of abuse was shouted at the drivers.

OK, maybe some adds a few more somments on the concert, but I do not recall a lot more. That was 4 shows to me in eight days, next one will be in Mannheim on Tuesday. I will keep you informed.

Cheers, JDelmere
