The Flood Zone/September 5, 1997

Prior to the show, Louis Ledford and I were discussing cigars, amongst other things, before USED CARLOTTA ascended to the stage to perform. I was more than a tad sorry that I hadn’t thought to bring more of these fine stogies rolled on the proverbial thigh of a Latina hussy. But I digress, Louis and the boys kicked butt and took names and e-mail addresses as the heady atmosphere of competition pervaded the Flood Zone. (By “heady atmosphere of competition” I refer to the CELEBRITY CORN SHUCKING that was held to benefit the local ASPCA between the first and second acts.) Such local luminaries as DaBuzz’s Mike Hsu, WCVE’s Steve Clark, WXGI’s traffic lady Jenny Jussell, the ever amiable Michael Hurley, and several other folks (some with dogs in tow) participated in this event of agro-athletics and dexterity. Unfortunately, none of these folks won; “a-maizingly” a Mystery Shucker guised in a lucha libre Mexican rasslin’ hood took top honors by a mere ear in this action-packed event. Hurley came in second, as I recall.

DIRTBALL then hit the stage with a full entourage. Old-timers Jimmy Garthoff and Paul Watson showed up too, with trombone, trumpet and banjo-guitar. These guys had nearly as many members as the Slack Family when they fully conjugate.

With a swerve, new mudflaps, and a rebuilt set of hydraulics, THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS of Athens, GA took hold of the wheel (avoiding a jack-knife and a possum or three) giving the crowd a taste of their own brand of southron-fried Demonic Possession…. I was hopin’ that they might hand out a rattlesnake or two for the folks to try a little old-time “serpent handling”, but alas.
