This is quite possibly the best 311 FAQ page on the net, however
I cannot take ANY credit at all for it. While trying to make my own
FAQ page, I stumbled across this one on a site named "The 311 Unity Homepage".
I must give Lucas Ellingson, the person who updates the site, full
credit...your FAQ kicks ass! To visit his kick ass 311 site, click below.

1.3 - What does 311 mean and whats this about the KKK?
I think the band said it best:
"It has come to our attention that there is a very unsettling rumor
circulating regarding the name of our band '311.' We have been told that
certain white supremacist groups use the numbers 311 to represent KKK.
This is a most unfortunate coincidence and one that is extremely disturbing
to us. We would like to state for the record that this is completely at
odds with our personal beliefs. We believe the only people worth hating
are organized haters like the KKK. Anyone familiar with our lyrics knows
how we feel. Our lyrics make a strong stand against racism and a strong
stand for positivity & unity. The name of our band originally comes
from an Omaha police citation for indecent exposure. We thought it was
funny at the time. Now our name simply means - five friends from Omaha
making music. Music that stands for peace and unity."
Sincerely,
311

A cool little story on how 311 got their name...
I was talking to my friend from Omaha who knows Jimi Watson (311's old
guitarist) and she was telling me this hilarious story. I'm not sure if
I've told you guys this so i'll just spiel it out again... well u guys
know how 311 got their name, indecent exposure... It turns out it was Jimi
skinny dipping in a pool.... The cops arrest him, cuff him naked, and take
him to his parents' house. Keep in mind he's 16-17 yrs old. The cop rings
the doorbell, Jimi's dad answers the door and there's his son standing
w/ the cop butt naked cuffed. His dad takes one look at him, and yells to
his wife in the other room..... "Honey, it's for YOU!"
When I heard that story I laughed so hard, I thought I'd share it with
ya'll...
Take care everyone, Ricky"

1.4 - Who designed the 311 logo?
The famous "311" logo was designed by the artists at The Pawn Shop Press,
also known for their artwork done for Cypress Hill and others. Funny thing
is that both 311 and Cypress mention The Pawn Shop Press in their Lyrics.
The Pawn Shop Press also designed the official 311 web site: www.311music.com

History
2.1 - How did 311 get started?
The band began playing together as 311 in 1990. The first REAL show was
opening for Fugazi at Sokol Hall in South Omaha on June10, 1990.
From that time on, the band was busy playing to packed houses in many
Omaha venues, as well as performing in other cities throughout the midwest.
311 produced several albums itself in Omaha, all of which sold well.
The crowds of faithful fans grew larger and larger, culminating in a farewell
concert at Peony Park in Omaha in February '92.
311 moved to Van Nuys Ca in March '92, renting a home (with a pool)
and started to work almost immediately. 311 attracted the attention of
Eddy Offord. (Eddy is a well-known record producer, having worked with
YES.) He saw the talent and strength in 311 and they made a demo tape in
L.A.

2.2 - How did the signing and first major album work out?
Several record companies were interested in signing 311. The winner was
CAPRICORN Records (a Warner Bros. label). Soon after being signed, the
band began recording the album at Ocean Studios in Burbank. Mixing happened
at Cherokee Studios; mastering at Ocean View Digital Mastering. Eddy Offord
was both producer and engineer. And the album was brought in both under
budget and under deadline.
MUSIC is a 12 song album. Four singles have been released: Do You Right;
Visit; My Stoney Baby and Feels So Good. Do You Right was featured in BILL-
BOARDS modern tracks chart.
Do You Right was also 311's first video. Filming for the video took
place in California and Omaha. Omaha filming sites included the Children's
Mus- eum, the Lied Jungle at the Henry Doorly Zoo, the Old Market and a
wonderful free concert at Sokol Hall. And what a concert it was! About
700 fans were lucky enough to see and be part of the video filming that
night. The video has been shown on MTV and many cable TV stations throughout
the country. The bright island rhythms, the strong contrast in colors and
high energy say lots about 311 and its style of music.
And the band played on, beginning to tour the nation after the release
of MUSIC in February '93. 311 crossed the country numerous times, playing
a total of 115 concert dates during 1993. The tour almost ended tragically
during a trip between Springfield MO and Kansas City on I-44. Nick was
driving the RV when he noticed it was running hot. When he pulled over,
he saw smoke and flames near the gas tank. The guys tried to rescue the
equipt- ment, but the RV exploded; the van caught fire and both burned
along the interstate. Traffic was backed up for 2 miles! Everything was
lost and several "minor" injuries sustained, but 311 regrouped quickly
and headlined one day later at the SHARKFEST at Sharky's Brewery in Omaha
with borrowed equipment and lots of determination. And the tour continued
throughout the fall.
December found the band back in Nebraska for four end-of-the-year concerts.
Two concerts at the Ranch Bowl (Omaha) and two at Rockin' Robin (Lincoln)
were beyond sellout and the wildest parties of the year in the Midwest!

5.3 - Are there any intentional/unintentional occurences on any songs?
during the song UNITY on MUSIC, 3:11 into the song (3 min, 11 sec), their
is a line "311 is down with the unity." Which is sampled into the the begining
of the song OMAHA STYLEE off of the GRASSROOTS album.
Table of Contents
5.4 - Why does the song "Firewater" sound so slow?
I think Nick said it best:
Firewater sounds that way because Chad wanted to slow it down on the
master reel to make it heavy. People think it's defective, but it's just
Chad's crazy idea.

5.5 - What is Nick saying when he "kicks NONSENCE in French"?
In the song, "Salsa" on GRASSROOTS. Nick says:"Je vaisa la plage parce
que le guignol est chouette!"
Nick Hexum supposedly said it means:
"I go to the beach because the puppet show is cool/grand"
which may be slang for:
"I go to the beach to dig chicks"

5.6 - Who is the girl on the inside cover of Grassroots?
The word on that is that Capricorn just put the picture on. Actually SA
said he was kinda suprised when he saw it. they didn't even know until
it came out. Possibly just a rumor.
