"Politics of the World" or "The way it should be"

Ok, so you've come to my politics page. Good for you. Well, what shall we tackle first? Probably the biggest topic of the day is drugs. Politicians, cops, parents, religious leaders and just about anyone in any kind of leadship position will tell you that they're the root of all evil. But how many of these people enjoy the most widely abused drug, alcohol? Or that other socially acceptable drug, nicotine? It seems that certain drugs are incuraged ("It's Miller time") while others are the cause of all of the ills of society. I will try to present my beliefs in a logical manner. Don't like it? Two options: 1) Get mad and do nothing about it 2)Mail me and tell me what you think.

O.K. lets start off with marijuana. The government says that most people do. And that it leads to harder drugs. Austrailia recently looked into the DEA's favorite phenominon, the "Gateway Drug" syndrome. Guess what? Those Aussies decided that people start off with pot because its cheap, easy to get and not really that bad for you. Here's the story. But don't tell the U.S. that. Pot's a horrible, sinister drug, remember? It makes people crazy and makes them steal and murder. That's why its the 3rd most used drug in the country. And all that lunacy can be traced back to pot. If that were true, Clinton, Hussein and every other two bit wacko running a country must be high constantly. That would explain Monica Lewinsky, but I don't think that's it. According to Drug Czar McCaffrey, Americans spent $7 billion on marijuana in 1995. There's got to be a pretty sizable percent of the population that's spending $7 billion. That's 7 billion untaxed dollars. $7 billion going straight into the black market. Hell, even McCaffrey's own son was busted for selling pot. The Netherlands, Germany and Vancouver have all experimented with decriminalization. Guess what? Its working. Now, I'm not saying pot is a harmless drug. No drugs are harmless. If you don't inherently know that, do me a favor and buy a clue. Tobacco, alcohol even prozac and aspirin. All those have side effects. From lung cancer and liver disease to upset stomachs. Truth is, pot is just about the most harmless recreational drug (ie: not exclusively medical, but i'm not gonna go into medical uses). OK, I will speak more on this later. Time for me to lump all other drugs together and deal with them.

Other, so-called "hard" drugs. For sanity's sake I'm lumping all other illegal drugs into this category. I do realize that LSD does not fit into the same category as crack or heroin, but you'll just have to deal with it. In 1995 Americans spent $38 billion on cocain and $9.6 billion on heroin. And that's straight from the DEA. So guess what? People use drugs. Lots of them. Drugs that society at large deems "bad." Much more opposition to these drugs than there is to marijuana. But did you know that at the turn of the century these drugs were in damn near all medicines? Cocaine was a wonder drug that people used to treat tooth aches and any pain that they had. Cough syrup had morphine in it. So these drugs used to be legal and everywhere, eh? Well, if what the DEA says it true, that drugs are the cause of violence, this must have been a time of profound violence. Oh sure, much more violence than today. Kids were taking guns to school. Employees going mental and killing co-workers. Nevermind. That's today. Drugs are illegal and those crazies are all drugged up. Ok, so most of the crazies aren't drugged up. But then, why all the violence being linked to drugs. Well, the violence is not an effect of the drugs themselves, but rather the paranoia and danger surrounding bringing these drugs to people. This country's population is spending billions of dollars every year on these illegal drugs and someone has to bring the drugs in. Who better to sneak around law enforcement than the mob and organized crime? They got their start during that era of stupidity, Prohibition, remember? We made alcohol illegal and made crime syndicates powerful. And these mobs aren't necessarily known for their friendly ways. So, since they're risking jail and other nasties to bring us our precious drugs (the drugs that society demands), they're gonna be violent if they encouter opposition in the form of law enforcement or someone trying to get their share of the lucrative drug trade. If it was legal to manufacture, transport, sell and consume drugs, none of this violence would exist. The "War on Drugs" is actually a war on our own society. People are never going to stop using drugs and the government needs to 'fess up to this simple truth. Drugs have been a part of every society since the begining of time. Remeber the Opium war? China wanted to sell their own opium to their people, but Britian wanted to sell their opium. We need to demand an end to the drug war, and allow, as John Stosl (sorry if I spelled that wrong, John) said, "Consenting adults make their own decisions" (If you missed his special "Sex, Drugs and Consenting Adults" you missed a great, and thought provoking, special).

You probably figured out that I'm some sort of liberal crazy who thinks that all drugs should be legal. Well, its true. I think all drugs should be legal. And taxed. And the tax money should be used on education. We're perfectly content to spend billions and billions of dollars on a "war" against drugs that's going no where and costing thousands of innocent lives every year, but neglect our educational system. And then have the nerve to get pissed when Japaneese, German and just about every other industrialized nations children perform better than our own do in school. Free or drug free. America can't be both. And in the last 60 years we've shown that we won't be drug free. So how 'bout letting us live how we feel fit to live? Allow us to pollute our bodies with the poisons we want. We have smoking and non-smoking sections. I sit in the non-smoking section. Why? I don't want to be around cigarette smoke. I don't want cigarettes to be illegal. Its up to people to make their own decisions. Be a vegetarian, but don't tell me I can't have a steak. When government tell us we can't do certain things to our own bodies, that's when it all comes undone. Please, if you feel like I do, write a web page, email the president, support the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, but most importantly, let your voice be heared.
