Everclear/Letters to Cleo/Our Lady Peace
Friday Nov. 14, 1997 @ Lupo's, Providence, RI
Once again we had bad weather here (in MA). Last time Everclear played Lupo's (2/16/96) there was a blizzard and I was not allowed to go even though I already had tickets for weeks prior to the show. Now of course Thursday night my parents told me that it was gonna snow and that we shouldn't go. The next morning it was flurrying and later on in the day it began to rain and hail on and off for the rest of the night. We hit the highway around 5:30p.m. It normally would have taken us about 1:15 minutes to get to RI. Because of the weather it took us 2 1/2 hours. The roads were slippery and it was hailing on and off the whole ride. Got worse as we got closer to RI. It still could have been a lot worse. We got to Lupo's a little before 8p.m the doors were suppose to open at 8, but they did not open until 8:30-8:45. It was so cold out there. I knew that all the trouble we went through to get down there, the show would be well worth it. And of course it was! Letters to Cleo came on first around 9-9:30. They Rocked!! Just like they always do :) They opened with "Demon Rock" then "Fast Way", "Co-Pilot", "Awake", "Jennifer". During "Here and Now" the crowd went nuts. They got so lively with moshing and crowd surfing and it even continued through the rest of their set. They also played "Anchor", and I think "Veda Very Shining". Those are all the songs I remember. It didn't seem they played a long set. There was probably more songs that I left out. If anyone else was there and remembers can drop me a line. Our Lady Peace came on next. There seemed to be a lot of fans of their there. They started pits even to the slower songs. It was cool though it makes shows fun. Finally Everclear came on. I'm not sure of the time. They opened with "So Much For The Afterglow" which was really cool a good song to open with. There was a good crowd there. We all went crazy. Then they played "Electra Made Me Blind", "You Make Me Feel Like A Whore", "Nervous and Weird", "Like A California King", "El Distorto Melodica" and "Amphetamine" which rocked!!! Then they played acoustic and did "Strawberry", "Heartspark Dollarsign", and "My Sexual Life", "Fire Maple Song". Then I think they plugged back in and played "Father of Mine", "I Will Buy You A New Life", "The Twistinside", "Santa Monica" on which Kay (Hanley) came on stage and sang back up with Craig. Then they played "Heroin Girl". I have got to say again that Craig has the best smile and he's got some intense eyes, when you make eye contact it's unbelievable. He smiled at us. I think he might have remembered us (probably not though). Steve did a good job, he really seems to be fitting in. I couldn't see Greg at all during the show. They came back out for an encore, the lights were dim and "Ataraxia" began to play. It was awesome cause I didn't think they were gonna play "Normal Like You", which ROCKED!! Then they played "Summerland", "Everything to Everyone" and ended the show with "Nehalem". While they were on stage at the beginning Art was saying how they always bring bad weather when they play there, he mention the 2/16/96 and there was a blizzard and they didn't have a packed house. I had tix for that show too. I took one picture of Everclear towards the end and I got the camera taken away. I told the guy I had only taken one picture and gave him sad face. After the show Jen reached over and grabbed the camera and I shoved it back into my pocket. The guy didn't seem to care that much. He even gave us the set list that we had asked for before the show! On our way out the door a guy at the bar said he was selling posters for $2. He gave one to Jen and then gave out some on the other end. I didn't get to get one. So she kept the poster and I kept the set list. The show got over a little before 12 a.m. We stood outside and walked around the building back and forth. It was about 1 1/2 before anyone came out. The first person we saw was Kay, when she walked by we said hi and great show and she thanked us. She looked like she was in a hurry so we didn't want to keep her. We saw Scott (also of ltc) by a tour bus. He was unloading equipment and bringing it to a car. About a 1/2- 1 hour later. I spotted Art walking towards the buses that we were standing near. There were about 5 people waiting by another door a little way down the street, he stopped and was talking and signing stuff for them. We walked up there and waited our turn. We said hi and he signed my set list, complimented me on my shirt. I told him thanks and that I wear it to all the shows. He said it looked familiar. Then we told him about the first time we met him at the Strand and I was on crutches and he said he remembered a girl on crutches. And we mentioned the solo show at Middle East. He said he remembered us :) He signed Jen's poster. He and another guy (I'm not sure of his name, maybe Sean) seemed to be in a hurry. It was so cold out too. We asked if we could take a picture and he said sure. His friend took the picture we thanked him and he left. I wish we could have chatted for a little bit longer. We also asked if the other guys were coming out and they said they had left about a hour ago :( I don't know how we managed to miss them. The weather was much better on the way home. It stopped raining/snowing/hailing out and the roads weren't as slippery. It only took about a 1 1/2 to get home. We got in a 4 a.m. IT WAS A REALLY GREAT SHOW!!! I wish I was able to get more pictures of them playing. Next time...
