Spring Break '97 in Europe
Last
Spring Break, my roommate (Brian Perry) and I took a low budget
trip to Europe. Our original plans were to fly to Spain and
spend the week there, but those got scrapped pretty fast.
Our journey started in beautiful Sabillasville, MD. After
saying goodby to my folks, Brian and I
left for Norfolk, VA. After about a
five hour drive, we ended up at the Naval Air Station at
Norfolk. We had about four hours to kill, so we went out to
eat and even went to the beach.
After waiting for what seemed like forever, we finally got onto our Space A military flight. Complete with meals and drinks. Not bad for free. After a stopover and a few drinks in Philadelphia, we flew across the Atlantic. We stopped on these Portugeuse islands to refuel, then we took off again for Sicily.
The first
thing we noticed in Sicily was how warm and sunny it was.
We went to a nearby town and got a hotel for the night, unpacked,
and took a quick power nap. When we got up, we went out to
the nearby U.S. Naval base and got blitzed. We went to this
awesome little enlisted club. They had these TVs everywhere
and they were playing shit like old Ozzy videos and Motley
Crue.
The next
morning, we paid the price for our binge drinking. I wasn't as hung over as Brian
was, but I didn't feel too hot. After
learning that our flight to Spain was mysteriously cancelled, we
decided to rent a car and go see the countryside. Our car
was a little Fiat, and was typical of the cars in Sicily.
After we figured how to put the car
in reverse (not an easy task) we took off. The first place
we went was this little dump of a town called Catania.
After we escaped from there, we went to this town called
Taormina. That was a pretty cool place. Lots of the
buildings
were really old and we got some good
pictures of them. They had some cool little bars
there
and it didn't take too long until we figured out how
to order a beer in Italian ("Bira!").
