Oasis @ the Fox Theatre
OASIS -I got to Atlanta at around 7:40 on Sunday night and was dropped of
out in front of the Fox Theatre. The Fox Theatre is a beautiful place, but
who the hell cares! I don't recall ever looking around saying, "my that's a
nice design on the wall," when Oasis was on stage.
Anyway, the ticket said doors open at 8, but when I got in at 7:40
Cornershop was already playing. From the door I thought it was just the house
music playing really loud, but when I got to my seat I saw that Tjinder guy up
on stage. The music was kind of cool at first, what with the sitars and
percussion and all, but it got old quick. That guy has no stage presence and
you couldn't hear him singing. The only cool thing about Cornershop was that
Noel came out and played bass on their last song, and they were done at around
8:20.
Oasis was onstage and playing by 8:40 which is really cool for people
who know what it's like to go to a concert that opens at 8 or something and
the headliner doesn't get onstage until after 12. Here is the set list as
best as I can remember it:
Be Here Now
Stand By Me
Supersonic
Roll With it
D'You Know What I Mean?
Cigarettes and Alcohol
Liam threw the tambourine around a lot and knocked his mic stand over a
lot. He kept pretending like the mic was a punching bag in between songs and
using the tambourine as a boxing glove. Liam and Noel talked to the people up
front a whole lot, but I couldn't understand a damn word they said. Liam
shook hands with almost everyone in the front row. Us Americans have trouble
with their accents. All of those songs were rad as hell. Liam was wearing a
black and red striped kind of shirt, Noel was wearing a yellow shirt and brown
pants, Bonehead was wearing a brown shirt, and Guigsy was wearing some kind of
denim shirt. Guigsy was playing a sunburst Fender P-bass with a red tortoise
shell pick guard, while Noel and Bonehead both played on their tradtitional
Epiphone hollow bodies. Noel played mostly on the brown that fades to yellow
one, and I believe Bonehead's was black. He was playing through a Matchless
amp, but I couldn't determine what Guigsy and Bonehead had. Alan was playing
a red set, but it wasn't the double bass set that he played on the MTV concert
in Manchester. Apparently they had a whole set that resembled the album cover
over in Europe, but they didn't have that here. Those of you familiar with
what goes on at an Oasis concert know that Noel plays an acoustic set in the
middle of the show. He played:
Don't Go Away
Help (yes, by the Beatles)
Fade In/Out
Don't Go Away sounded great when Noel played it by himself, much better
than the album version in my opinion. His version of "Help" made it sound as
if it were an Oasis song. On the "please please help me" part, he didn't
quite do the falsetto like the Beatles do, he just sang it in his normal
voice. On Fade In/Out, he was accompanied by some sitar player from
Cornershop. It was a pretty cool twist on the song.
The whole band minus Liam came back out for "Don't Look Back In Anger".
I was really hoping for Magic Pie since we all know that song kicks ass, but
Don't Look Back In Anger was definitely one of the best songs they did.
Continuing with the set list:
Don't Look Back in Anger
Wonderwall
Live Forever
It's Gettin' Better (Man!)
Champagne Supernova
Liam came back out for Wonderwall, which I'm sure you guess they played
electric. During the end of Live Forever, Liam did like he always does and
stared out into space. He also took a liking to spreading his body out across
the PA and just generally being aloof during Noel's solos.
They left the stage, and then they came back for an encour with Acquiesce.
This is a b-side to Some Might Say, a great Oasis song and one I was hoping
they would play. The concert was over at 10:30, and I had a great time.
Memorable moments: When Noel got done with his acoustic set and came
back on stage with his electric and the rest of the band, he said, "that was
top, wasn't it?" (referring to his performance, of course). Only Noel
Gallagher can say something like that.
At one point, Noel was tuning and adjusting some stuff on his amp. Liam
was just standing there ready for the next song. He told Noel to, "hurry up,
you fucking cunt," Noel looked over and laughed at Liam, then he said he
would, "take all the time he wanted,". Noel went up to the mic and said he
would be back because he had to go do something. He left the stage and came
back after about 30 seconds of perplexity.
The only other thing I understood from Liam was when he asked the
audience, "Are ya enjoying yahselves?"
Stand By Me got dedicated to some person up front who was holding up a
Man City towel (I think?) and wearing a Man City jersey. You know just as
well as I do that that person was just a kiss ass. Nobody in Atlanta, GA
knows a damn thing about some soccer team, or football club as lots of you
call it, in England.
And that was the show. If you ever get a chance to catch Oasis, don't
miss the opportunity because it was the best show I ever saw, of course.
