Step as far into the future as you can, then take a look back into the past. Do it, and you'll see that our world, after being obliterated by a global thermonuclear war, was once roamed by a blood-thirsty horde of neo-barbaric warriors. Cannibalism, murder and rape were their only means of survival as these futuristic monsters of destruction stalked their human prey across contaminated earth. The horrific image of these nomadic predators was once an integral part of Carnivore, Brooklyn's most lethal ensemble of postnuclear musical mayhem. Through the release of two vicious albums (Carnivore - '85 and Retaliation - '87) Carnivore developed a controversial local following, one where they were loved as much as hated. But in February '88, just as the band was on the verge of breaking free from the confines of Brooklyn, personal differences within the group intensified and caused the untimely extinction of the deadly Carnivore.
Following the breakup, Carnivore founder/vocalist/bassist/songwriter Peter Steele abandoned his musical career and toyed with the idea of becoming a New York City police officer. "I thought that that part of my life was over, and $45,000 a year sounded really good to me," Peter says. "Killing legally sounded really good to me too."
To Peter, Carnivore served as a tremendous release for his combustible inner rage. "It was like psycho-therapy for me. To be able to scream 'f*ck you,' 'suck my d*ck,' and 'I hate you' for two hours three or four times a week really does something to your mind. It was like some kind of psycho-orgasm." But after the band's collapse, Peter felt the absence of a channel for his anxiety, and in August of that year he formed what would be his most intense project to date: Type O Negative. Quite possibly the finest band to emerge from under the streets of New York City in recent times, Type O Negative (Peter-vocals, bass/Kenny-guitar/Sal-drums/Josh-keyboards) picks up where Carnivore left off, taking the Carnivore foundation to new and more dangerous extremes; engulfing the listener in a glorious world of anger, destruction, pain and fear. "It's an extension of the things that I feel in my heart," explains Peter, who signed his contract with Roadracer in blood and semen, drawn on the spot by his own hand. "The slow, loud tempos and screaming vocals are like the agony that I feel when things don't go right."
Type O Negative's debut Roadracer release is entitled Slow, Deep and Hard, which not only suggests the band's musical style but also applies to the harsh sexual overtones that lace the angst-ridden record. The bizarre structure of the album features epic songs that are each broken down into numerous sub-songs, connecting in a giant orgy or hatred and violence. A thread of despair and all-out rage towards mankind strings the dark arrangements together, culminating in an effort that emphasizes the band's slogan, "none more negative." "My outlook on life is real negative," Peter says. "The only reason that I exist is to avoid non-existance. I live because I fear death. Most people don't want to die because they don't know what's after death. They'd rather deal with their problems than take a chance and blow their brains out and maybe wind up in a better place."
It is this type of frightening ideology that runs rampant throughout Slow, Deep and Hard as realistic subjects like welfare, infidelity, rape, vengeance, sex and suicide are all bathed in eerie light. "Only heroes kill themselves--cowards don't kill themselves," says Peter about the track "Gravitational Constant." "Choosing your own death is a privilege, and I think that I will most certainly die by my own hand. I'm not going to wait for death to come and get me, whether it be by cancer or the D train."
Musically, Type O Negative defies categorization, employing sounds and styles in such a way that they resemble no other band on the planet. Elements of raw thrash, hardcore, grunge and industrial music can be found in their material (backed by haunting keyboards and gruesome sound effects), but when combined in this fashion, traditional descriptions are all but eliminated. With Type O Negative, the penetration is Slow, Deep and Hard, and depending on your threshold of pain, you'll have no choice but to find yourself immersed in blissful agony, screaming for more.
