Another product of the Liverpool youth system, Carragher marked his debut against Aston Villa on 8th
January 1997, with a splendid goal. Over the years, Carragher has improved signifcantly enough to earn
himself a full England cap. Prior to that, he was more well-known for a string of off-field incidents,
particularly an incident at Liverpool's christmas party.
Although Carragher is primarily a midfielder, he has been used in defence more often. He began the season
partnering Sami Hyypia at the heart of defence when Stephane Henchoz was injured. During his time in the side,
Carragher put in good performances and made a few heads turn. Unfortunatley for the young player, he found himself
at the wrong place in the grudge match against Manchester United at Anfield, and scored two own goals in a
single match. Predictably, he took most of the blame for that defeat.
In spite of this, he went on to put in solid performances. However, "attitude problems" saw the player left
out of the squad that defeated Sunderland and made to train with the reserves. Since then, Henchoz has
formed a good partnership with Hyypia and Carragher has had to wait his turn on the sidelines.
