Dietmar Hamann made headlines by becoming Liverpool's most expensive signing since Stan Collymore
after switching over from Newcastle.
Hamann had a nightmare start to the season when he limped off during the opening match against
Sheffield Wednesday. The injury kept him out from the earlier games of the season. His return was
a welcome one as his defensive qualities were sorely missed. The German international operates as a
defensive midfielder but his attacking qualities are well known.
His return coincided with Stephane Henchoz's return from injury. As such, Liverpool's defensive
record showed signs of improvement. His presence in the centre of the park has also provided a
calming influence for the side's younger midfielders. Hamann's skills also complements that of the wide
players like Patrik Berger and Vladimir Smicer.
Ideally, the player could also do with more appearances for his national side.
