After making his Liverpool debut against Southampton on 16th August 1998, Heggem quickly
created a reputation for being a defensive and offensive force. After last seasons disappointing
7th place finish, the discovery of Heggem proved to be a consolation. Like his countryman Bjorn
Kvarme, Heggem made an early impact but he did not fade away and went on to improve his attacking
game with his runs down the flank as the season progressed. Only an injury late in the season
prevented him from playing a full season for the club.
With competition for the right-back slot coming from Rigobert Song, Heggem has started fewer games
this season, but he is still used as a sub even when he is left out of the starting eleven. Hence,
Heggem has featured in most matches. As usual, he has provided creative runs down the flank, prompting
even more suggestions that he should be played in midfield to channel his talents in the right direction.
