Dominic Matteo rose from Liverpool's youth ranks to make his full debut for the first team on 23rd October 1993. However, he was a late developer, and never had the sort of early success that good friend, Robbie Fowler enjoyed. Through the years, Matteo has worked hard on his game and has developed into one of Liverpool and England's better defenders. He is comfortable on the ball and has built up his confidence, enabling him to move forward more often. Never one to have luck with injuries, Matteo was forced to pull out of several England squads through injury.

It is perhaps surprising that with such talent, Matteo has found himself coming under the scrutiny of fans. It is no secret that his favoured position is in the centre of defence, but with the club having an abundance of centre-halfs, Matteo has been given the chance to make the left-back slot his own. Throughout the season, he has had to contend with rumours that the club are after new left-backs. There has been speculation involving players like Markus Babbel and Ben Thatcher among others, but this has just strengthened Matteo's resolve to keep his place.
