When Paul Ince and Steve McManaman departed before the season, Jamie Redknapp took
on the role of team captain. Redknapp is no stranger to the fans, having signed for the Reds as a
teenager almost a decade ago. Since his debut on 23rd October 1991 against French side Auxerre,
Redknapp has matured into a key man in Liverpool's engine room. Well known to everyone is Redknapp's
passing and crossing ability as well as his great vision. Redknapp has been unlucky with injuries in the
past, particularly when playing for England. Injuries sustained in international duty left him unable to play
for club and country.
His luck has not changed. After leading the team to a good run in the first half of the season, Redknapp
sustained a long-term knee injury which would practically rule him out for the rest of the season.
Nonetheless, Redknapp has been a key figure in Liverpool's challenge with his distribution skills.
According to his teammates, Redknapp has also been influential off the field and has all the makings
of a good leader in spite of his reputation for being "too nice".
Redknapp's steady leadership has been a key element in the transformation of the club and this
has led to great changes in the players' attitudes.
