David Thompson is a home-grown talent and emerged from the reserves into the first team late in the 98/99 season. Like most other players who came through the youth ranks, Thompson is good at the basics and has tremendous skill and speed. He is not afraid to play in a direct style and challenge opposing defenders. After featuring in last season's Potins League side which emerged runner-up, Thompson earned recognition from the fans.

This season, Thompson has had the opportunity to play in more league games to gain exposure. While playing alongside senior internationals like Jamie Redknapp, Patrik Berger and Didi Hamann, Thompson has gained valuable experience.

The player has come a long way since he was sent to train with the youth side after getting into a row with Gerard Houllier over a sending-off. Many believe that Thompson, along with young Steve Gerrard are being groomed for bigger things and it is no secret that the duo will form a vital part of the Reds engine room in years to come.

Houllier has openly acknowledged that Thompson's attitude has improved since the incident. However, discipline remains one of the fiery player's problems. He continues to pick up a great number of cards.
