Liz Phair In New York City, NY, July 16, 1998

Subject: With Love and Roses, Songs By Women and for Women
Date: Sat, 18 Jul 1998

Liz Phair's songs envision more confusion and complexity; in "Johnny Feelgood", from her new album whitechocolatespaceegg (Matador/Capitol), she pondered the allure of an abusive bad boy, calmly singing, "And I liked it." Ms. Phair, after years of ambivalence about performing, has now found confidence onstage; as she led a band that could rock like the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground while it navigated her odd song structures, her introversion was gone. She poured her voice into melodies as her songs examined mistakes she might make again.
