Ok then, I had the honour of getting an all access backstage pass for the first ever concert for the band in South Africa. This took place in Cape Town.
I went into the stadium with some friends which were the support act (Just Jinger) and they were doing a soundcheck of a new song I've never heard, it might well be the song they recorded here and it sounded very much like an Achtung Baby ballad. I proceded to go to the backstage area and went and stood maybe 20 meter's from them. My mind and heart were racing and it was sheer torture not being able to take photographs as we were told it was classified as a preformance and they wanted no pic's taken.
They played for 5 mins or so and then left; then Bono turned and saw us and started approaching. We weren't too sure if we were allowed to be where we were (hey, it was the POP backstage) but we maintained our pose and spoke as if we hadn't noticed him. Saying he assumed we were locals Bono shook each of our hands, and we started speaking about anytihng we could think of from the stage to the screen to the country.
None of this was sinking in to me at that point and it seemed as if we had all known this man and he was a friend, he was just incredible, no 'I am a pop star' attitude. When asked if it was at all possible to get a photograph or two with him he laughed and got one of HIS crew to come over and take them so that we could all be in one together.
So much more happened that day as well as watching the concert from in front and behind and running around on the stage we even walked behind the band when they were approaching to go on stage but it would all be to much to write. I also got to meet The Edge, Adam & Paul Mcguiness. This happened at the Johannesburg show at a meet and greet for Polygram S.A. I got into this as I manage a CD store and am friends with the Island label manager for here. I got signatures from all three but did not get to see Larry Mullen jr. In Cape Town they were very tired from celebrating Adam's birthday so they did not hang around the stadium so I didn't get Larry's sigmature at all, and sadly not Bono's either. Stupid bastard you might be saying but meeting your idol your mind does not think logically. I've sent off the pic of us and asked very nicely if their managment might get Bono to sign it.
As said before this might all be very vague but it's all inside and hard to write about.
