Time: 7:30ish Place: Queens Wharf Events Centre, Wellington What: Breathe playing support for The Feelers Breathe are being watched...whether they realise it or not, the keen-eyes fans at the front have spotted them and are commenting on their every move..."Andrew's boxing...Steve's stretching" The lights go off...screams ring out...laughter "YAY! THE LIGHTS!" Tee Hee...oh well, so the lights going out meant nothing..too bad. Then some noisy Star Wars type music comes bursting from the speakers. More cheers, then BREATHE!!! The familiar intro to "Get To You" breaks the silence (silence...yeah right) met by screams of approval from the huge audience. While the events centre was certainly no full to capacity these three fine kiwi bands had certainly attracted a substantial crowd. The strobe light kicks in and the remaining boys take to the stage and stand in their designated spots. Andrew Tilby's voice is once again pure perfection, it's no wonder he won most promising male vocalist..no one was more deserving..this boy can sing! Me and my ever present side kick were once again near the front so could see absolutely everything. I could tell you what they were wearing but even I don't care...(although the little green local content ribbon on Andrew's collar was mistook (by me) as a Playboy bunny and I must say..I was shocked) I've never in my veteran 4 Breathe shows (I know, as a Wellingtonian I should've done better, my bad) seen Steve go so hardcore with his instrument. Sidekick comented that she was concerned he'd hurt himself by connecting head with keyboard, while myself was worried he'd end up trapped underneath his keyboard. Anyway, it was a beautiful thing to see how he totally gives himself over to the music, and evidently enjoys what he does. I felt a little sorry for young Pet all alone on his side of the stage..the stage was too big and he looked isolated but gained many a visit from Mr Tilby who seems more comfortable with his "sex symbol" status (sorry but it's true) even treating the ladies to serenades crouched down at the edge of the stage and legendary guitar hero poses. I'm sure he mocked me however, when during a silent inbetween song break I let out a "whoohoo!" only to be mimicked by said vocalist. Oh well, thems the breaks..I couldn't hold it it! The next song..according to my already fuzzy memory..was Started Something. Me and the Tilbster (yeah we go waaaaaaaaaay back) sang this one together..plus a few hundred others but who's counting? Guy was banging away like a little kid with pots and pans, watching the crowd with a big grin on his face. Order of songs from here has totally slipped my mind. Hmmm, perhaps, Drivin' next? Again, exellent, this song never fails to please. Smiley Hands, another crowd favourite (as was Purple which was met by screams of delight) was modified by an improv (? Actually i don't know what it was and quite frankly I couldn't hear what he was singing either). One thing that I've come to notice is a distinct lack of chatter from the band. Something about always being out of tune and "hi we're Breathe" But then again, many people prefer it that way (wel Korn, see RIU) Anywho, Breathe played all the singles off PopLife plus a couple of new ones and a B-side and well, I didn't know them so I couldn't tell if they were old or new but damnit they were good so OBVIOUSLY the new album is gonna rock but we all doubt already were well aware of that. Highlights include: Andrew and Pet making kissy kissy tongue waggling faces at each other (something we should know about guys?) Richard totally lost in self induced guitar heaven, Richard's 'out there' dancing during guitar solos and tamborine solos ("and banf and kick and bang 2..3..and kick") and the dramatic exit from the stage to rapturous applause only to return seconds later to retrieve the gear! Once again Breathe outdid themselves and i can't wait to see them for the fifth time (and 6th and 7th etc etc). Rock on with your badselves and I hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we enjoyed seeing you!
