Beatles Fan Sought For Job In McCartney's Old Home

LONDON (Reuters) - Wanted -- Beatles fan to take tourists on magical mystery tours of the childhood home of Paul McCartney. The small house in Liverpool where McCartney grew up and wrote tourists in July, and the owners are looking for a live-in tour guide.

The 9,760 pound ($15,900) a year job, advertised Monday, involves living at one of the most famous addresses in pop music history, keeping the house and its refurbished 1950s period decor clean and showing visitors around.

  Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr is hoping he can boost donations to a cancer charity with a little help from his friends. the 57 year old former beatle appealed to britons on wednesday to give generously to the marie curie cancer care's $53 million golden daffodil appeal. his appeal came a year to the day from when he lost his mother-in-law to the disease. Starr hopes topersuade people to buy one of the charity's golden daffodils rather than spend the money on a lottery ticket. starr's daughter, lee, now 27, suffered a brain tumor two years ago but has recovered. his first wife, maureen, died of leukemia in 1995. "It's terrifying. you don't want it to happen and you don't believe it," he said of his daughter's bout with cancer. "but you just have to stand up and get on with it."

 Stela McCartney

Wednesday in her second show for Chloe, from lingerie-like disco styles totailored trouser suits to naughty necklines.

For the disco-queen gals, McCartney created light, summery wear like embroidered slip dresses in satin or chiffon blends, terribly tight and clinging, skirts below knee.

Her program cited global warming as a reason for a collection that looks more summery than wintery. And divas or dazzling creatures that women want to appear as at night are another facet of her generation.``Sexy without aggression,'' she says. This show was in a tent in the Trocadero gardens, not the grandeur of the Garnier Opera like last time. But Mum and Pop, Linda and Paul, the forme Beatle, applauded their 25-year-old daughter, who dedicated the collection ``to my Mum, consistent to my philosophy of 'mix and match.'''

Sean Lennon

"More than anything, the crowd that packed Liberty Lunch Saturday night did so just to catch a glimpse of Sean Lennon, the 23-year-old son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. And indeed, he was a sight to see; in his glasses ana shaggy hairdo, he did bear a resemblance to his father. More intriguing Lennon took the stage and proceeded to tell the crowd, in a high-pitched voice that sounded like he'd been sucking helium all day, how much he liked Austin. He later attempted a joke, perhaps poking fun at all the barbecue in town: "So I hope you all are meat-eaters."

Lennon matched his awkward stage presence with the most bright, sweet, flowery music the crowd had probably heard since "The Partridge Family" was taken off the air. Perhaps to a fault, the young prince has his head in the clouds, where dad often hung out but never stayed for very long. The music he played off his upcoming "Into the Sun" album, such as the title track (which faintly echoed "A Day in the Life" and "Mystery Juice"), would be considered wildly sappy and overly dreamy were it written by anyone who wasn't Sean Lennon. He does have a touch of his own style, a weird mixture of soft jazz and indie-rock that was evident in "Spaceship." With members of Cibo Matto as his backing band, he also echoed his mother's music many times.

THE BEATLES GOING TO COURT

Former Beatle George Harrison has been giving evidence in a courtroom battle over an amateur recording of the group made at the beginning of their fame 36 years ago.

Mr Harrison, Ringo Starr, Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, are asking a High Court judge to ban sales of a CD produced from tapes made in 1962.

It was made by Edward Taylor, leader of obscure 1960s band King Size Taylor and The Dominoes, when he was playing a double bill at Hamburg's Star Club with the Beatles.

He claimed to be a friend of the band and that John Lennon had verbally agreed to allow him to record the Fab Four's performance.

The recording was made on the Beatles' last trip to the German club - fulfilling their contract after they had signed with EMI Records and were enjoying their first hit, Love Me Do.

Mr Platts Mills said the only people allowed to make recordings of the Beatles at that time was EMI under the terms of a contract signed by their manager, Brian Epstein.

The current action is being made under the 1989 Copyright Act which gives more protection to artists and writers.

The case is expected to last all week.

Harrison tells of 'crummiest' record

George Harrison went to court today to try to ban the "crummiest" record ever put out in the name of The Beatles. He claims it was made during their "wild" period and on a domestic tape recorder without their permission.

The 54-year-old former Beatle told Mr Justice Neuberger in the High Court that none of the band gave permission for the December 1962 recording to be made at the Star Club in Hamburg.

"The last thing we needed was some little bedroom recording to come out, to haunt us for the rest of our lives," he told the court.

He claims the late John Lennon gave him permission to record the Beatles in return for getting the drinks in, and that he was also told he could do what he liked with the recording. That did not happen, said Harrison. "This was one drunk person recording another bunch of drunks. It does not constitute a business deal.

"I could go out tonight and record Mick Jagger. But it does not mean I could go out and sell it tomorrow."

Edited with Introductory Comments By Joseph Sguigna

INTRODUCTION

1. Their music

2. Their influence

3. In Retrospect: 1995

1 "I kept hearing these sounds and I kind of felt like something was about to happen. Having been around so many years before that, you can get a sense when things are about to happen. And they happened! It was a phenomenal thing. I was like what we called "swept". And that's exactly what they [the Beatles] did."

—Gladys Knight,singer

3 "What happened was, I was in the living room and my radio was on the refrigerator in the kitchen. And I heard this music coming into the room and I went "Uh-oh. Everything's changed now!" That was my basic statement to myself: "Everythhing's changed now! Something has happened." And it was "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

—Joe Walsh, singer
