Review of Deftones with Limp Bizkit and Will Haven at the Ranch Bowl 12/10/97
Well this was a highly anticipated show for me. This was my fourth time seeing the Deftones. Every time I'd seen them, they were better than the time before. This time was no exception.
Got to the Bowl at about 7:00 and stood outside in the cold for about an hour waiting for the doors to open. It wouldn't have been so bad, but it was freezing and then it started snowing on us. Finally the doors opened and we got in. when we got in, they were playing Coal Chamber on the p.a. system. There was so much energy in the room, a pit just about broke out for the cd that was being played.
After about 15 minutes inside, Will Haven took the stage. I have to admit, I've heard better local bands. Will Haven made me want to leave the room, so I walked up to Quick Trip and got some food. When I got back, everybody was filing out. At least they played a short set.
I mingled with the crowd a little and then went in to get ready for Limp Bizkit. LB took the stage and the place was a madhouse. The only problem was they didn't sound that good. I had seen them in Kansas City and they sounded great. They still put on a good show. The highlight had to be when they started playing Blind and everybody was going nuts, Fred stopped right after "Are you ready?" and said "Psych. We're Limp Bizkit, not Korn." It made for a really good laugh. Not long after that, they were done. Now the time I had been waiting over a year for was close at hand.
The Deftones took the stage and opened with Lotion. The place was going crazy. For once, Chino was actually in good mood. All the other times I had seen them, Chino was always pissed. Next they played My Own Summer (Shove It). Everybody was singing along and having fun. Then they did Root, which always gives me goosebumps live. I can't remeber the exact order they did the songs in. But of all their songs, the only ones they didn't play were: "Lifter", "Minus Blindfold", "One Weak", "Can't Even Breathe", "Lhabia", and "Dai the Flu". When they did "Bored", they slowed it down which made it sound better than on the album. "Headup" was the next to last song, and it was the best song of the night. Chi and the audience did Max's part. it was just a great show.
I think the Tones were happy to see such a turn out. Considering the punk-ass, sell-out, losers, 311 had the balls to play a show in Lincoln (about 45 minutes from Omaha) on the same night. Deftones sold out their show about four days before the show, I don't think 311 even sold out their show. It goes to show how much Omaha loves their "Hometown Boys" 311.
