Grateful Dead
6/14/68
(late show)
Fillmore East, New York City, NY
This is a must-have set from the early era. This was the first
GD appearance at the legendary Fillmore East, and recently this
fairly listenable audience tape has come into circulation.
(There is no board tape of this show, which is a pity.) The
entire set is played with an intensity and energy which makes
most tapes from this year pale in comparison. They took the NYC
audience by storm that night, just look at that setlist.
Feedback to open and Feedback to close. In between, the only
Eleven > St Stephen ever played in this configuration (
instead of the other way round), which works amazingly well.
All songs seamlessly segue into each other, it's really a
single piece of truly psychedelic and very wild music, with
Garcia being *very loud* and right in your face. Pigpen is
also at his very best here, delivering unique versions of
"Lovelight", "Alligator" and "Caution". Wow! (By the way,
just five days later they would blow the roof off the Carousel
Ballroom in S.F. with a totally different, more west-coasty,
but equally wild and intense set. Be sure to check out that
one as well, it works great as a "companion tape" to this one.)
