1.1 Who is in the Cranberries?

1.2 Where is the band from?

They're from the suburbs of Limerick, Ireland. Limerick is one of the four districts/counties of Ireland, and is located in the southwest corner region of Ireland. To be exact, Dolores is from Ballybricken (a village eight miles outside Limerick), Mike and Noel are from Moycross (an equally small town), and Fergal is from Parteen.

1.3 When did they get together?

The Cranberries got together in 1990.

1.4 How did they get together?

The boys were already playing together for a long time. One time the boys were performing in the park of Limerick and Dolores joined them to show what she could do, and they were astonished by her abilities. She then did a jamming session with them, and she joined the boys as an official member.

1.5 Who is Don Burton?

Don Burton is the present husband of Dolores. He used to be the road manager for Duran Duran in 1993. The Cranberries were the opening act for Duran Duran back in 1993, and that's how the two met. Of course, Duran Duran quickly stopped touring, and the Cranberries continued with their Euro tour, but after Dolores' freak accident while skiing in Finland, the Cranberries canceled their 2nd US "Everybody Else..." tour supporting Stone Temple Pilots, and make time for her to hang with Don and Duran Duran in the US. The two eventually got married in a highly controversial manner in Ireland in July 1994.

1.6 Who is Brendan O'Riordan?

He is the brother of Dolores: he did the backing vocals on the song 'Uncertain'.

1.7 Who is Mike Mahoney?

He is the former boyfriend of Dolores. She suffered a lot in this relationship. He performed backing vocals and additional sounds on the song 'Dreams'.

1.8 I've heard of Cranberry Saw Us. What is it?

Originally, the boys teamed up with Niall Quinn and they called their band Cranberry Saw Us, a crude pun on the Thanksgiving staple. Dolores was not part of the group at this time. When the frontman Niall left the band (amicably), Dolores came in and shortened the name to The Cranberries. The boys were looking for a more serious approach, and Dolores wrote the kind of lyrics they were looking for.

As you know, Mike and Noel are brothers. They have a few siblings. Fergal has at least two older sisters and Dolores is the youngest of eight children: she has one sister and six brothers.

Dolores has at the most TEN earrings in her right ear, and it looks at the moment that she has TEN earrings in her left ear as well.

1.12 What is the real color of Dolores' hair? Why does she dye it in all these different colors?

The real color of Dolores' hair is brown. So what if she decides to dye it? Dont ask her about it - shes been known to walk out of interviews when that question is asked. Why does anyone dye their hair? At the moment she's got her natural color again (February 1996)

Dolores is happily married to Don Burton. Noel married Catherine Nash on 7/8/96. Fergal is engaged to be married on 4/2/97, and Mike has a steady girlfriend.

Don Burton was married once before, and has a child. (Hence, the verse, "You and YOUR BABY... in the song, "Dreaming My Dreams"). The child is now in Don and Dolores' hands.

1.16 Did Dolores' marriage affect the Cranberries at all?

As a result of their marriage, Don Burton brought the Cranberries over to Left Bank Productions (his company), and is the proud manager of the Cranberries. The result of this operation was:

1. More attention for PRing through the media.
2. A change in approach in PRing the band.
3. Less cost involved on behalf of the band.

As for the change in approach: the Cranberries were initially promoted as an "alternative" band (whatever that means). However, Dolores doesn't like to be categorized into any musically genre, and rightfully, the Cranberries has a broader musical appeal. This was a significant move on behalf of marketing, (regardless of Dolores' wishes or "artistic" identity) since this promoted the Cranberries as a very unique eclectic band. "Zombie" for the "Alternative" kids, "Ode to My Family" and "Linger" to the more older, VH-1ish greatest hits crowd, and "Dreams" and "Zombie" (again) to the more modern Rock 'n' Roll crowd. All this resulted in more international attention and money to the Cranberries.

1.17 Do the members of The Cranberries make music outside the band?

Dolores did some solo projects. She lent her vocals for "The Sun Does Rise" on Jah Wobble's "Becoming More Like God" album, and she did backing vocals for Twist of Oliver's "Carousel" She also performed with Pavarotti and Simon LeBon at the Pavarotti and Friends concert in Modena, Italy on September 26 1996. She sang Linger with Simon and Ave Maria with Pavarotti.

Dolores had many influences: traditional Irish, classical piano, and the religious church music from her time she sang in church. She likes African music as well. If you have listened to the bootleg "Blood Strawberries" there's a little Dolores interview where she hints that she gets some concepts from African music (REALWORLD).

2.12 Why was the first album called EEIDISWCW?

Dolores was unhappy at one stage. The critics were very hard on the berries for their Uncertain-album, and the new album with Pearse Gilmore was becoming a catastrophy, so she gave up hope. One night she was attending a concert by local talented groups, and looking at all these groups, she said to her boyfriend: Everybody else is doing it, so why can't we?

2.14 What's all this about a CD-ROM? Where can I get it? What do I need to run it?

A CD-ROM was released in September 1995. It contains previously unreleased audio tracks, a film clip of Zombie from the Cranberries Woodstock 94 appearance, and a collection of pictures and other information. It retails right around $25 US, although it can be found lower. The CD-ROM is available at record stores and software stores. Not all of them carry it, though, so it may take some looking around or a special order.

The CD-ROM can be played on audio CD players, Mac and PC home computers, and Interative CD-ROM systems. Contrary to some of the rumors out there, this disc was designed to be played on all the different machines and will not damage any of them (although the label warns that the first audio track is actually all the data and should NOT be played on audio CD players - it can potentially ruin your speakers).

2.15 When I saw the Cranberries in concert, some music was played before they came out? What was it? Is it always the same?

The various artist music that were played before the berries performance are what the berries chose to be played. During their "Everybody Else" days, they'd enter with "The Falls" from "The Mission" soundtrack.

But they actually enter onto stage during the NNTA tour with a song called, "Bread and Wine" from the "Passion/Last Temptation of Christ" soundtrack by Peter Gabriel (it's the "Disneyland" introduction music that the berries entered onto the stage with.

4.1 What magazines are good for The Cranberries music?

Any good music magazine will have some news about the Cranberries. Look in 'Guitar for the Practicing Musician' or 'Guitar World' for guitar tabs.

4.2 Have any books been written about the band?

It gives you several pictures and a detailed history of the band, as well as a list of all the influencing events that they went through.

Another book is called "In Your Head" by Stuart Bailie. It, too, has lots of cool pictures in it and discusses the Cranberries success from a different perspective. The two books complement each other.

The Cranberries also have minor appearances in two other books: the Woodstock 94 book and the MTV Unplugged book. In the back of the Unplugged book are some outtakes from interviews with the band during the making of the Cranberries episode. However, there is not enough in either book to justify their cost (unless you like other featured bands or have to have a complete collection).

Also, there is an interview with Dolores in the book Women, Sex, and Rock and Roll by Linda Evans. It is difficult to find, but it is a transcript of an interview Dolores gave without any commentary from the interviewer.

4.3 Is there some kind of fanzine?

Yes, a 1996 calendar has been released by Danilo Press. It is not the easiest to find, but it's out there.

CD-boots are usually released under labels like KTS (Kiss the Stone), Goregon, Cocomelos, Backstage, On Stage, Papercorn, etc. Be warned that these bootlegs are expensive! Single cd's cost $23.99-$29.99, Double cd's $40-$50, 5-cd box sets are 95-$125.

6.1 Do The Cranberries have a fan club?

6.2 What do I get for my money?

An annual fee of $22 US will get you:

All you need is to send in your basic address, date of Birth, and phone number. You can also "credit card" your enrollment too.

The USA-address is very slow in handling your enrollment, and shipping out the goods. Be patient, and hope for the best.

The European address hasn't made this promotion, so I don't know if they are the Fan Club, or if they'll send you those goods.

6.3 Are there any other The Cranberries fan organizations besides the Fan Emporium?

Not that we know of.

Yes. There are both a newsgroup (alt.music.cranberries) and a mail-reflector mailing list at uclink4.berkeley.edu. There is no digest-format at this time.
