Reupholstery
We stand in the bedroom
of a child who is no longer a child.
I drape myself over the plush floral bed
my hair brushing against the floor, collecting dust
While you peel the paint
Slowly off the walls
Underneath the mattress there are pictures
Tame, but naughty to a 12-year-old
Bit by bit we uncover the old
and make anew.
The basecoat has so bold a colour
And underneath the rug there
Is a beautiful hardwood floor
In need of just a little polishing.
Ripped apart, it's our room now
Reflecting reupholstery
This old new room
Is the perfect place for two adults
who are no longer adults.
